Answer Hello Steve, While the unit is cold, so the defrost thermostat 67004757 is below 20°F, you need to remove the back wall of the freezer compartment and test the resistance of the defrost thermostat. It should read zero resistance until it reaches 50°F at which time it will read no continuity. If it doesn't read zero resistance while it's still cold enough, it's the cause of your issue. If it tests good, you can test the defrost heater 67004188 which should read somewhere from 15 ohms to 120 ohms of resistance. There is also a thermistor on the top of the evaporator which tells the control when to activate a defrost mode. These cannot be tested without breaking the insulation, so it's recommended to replace it rather than testing it. The last component of the defrost system on this unit is the control 12784415. To test the control, one of the following should force a defrost mode: First ADC Test Method: • Turn thermostat off for 15 seconds • Turn thermostat on for 5 seconds • Repeat the above two more times • In 3 to 8 seconds ADC goes into defrost mode • If ADC fails to go into test mode, try second test mode Second ADC Test Method: • Unplug unit from wall outlet for 30 seconds • Turn thermostat off • Plug in unit • In 3 to 8 seconds ADC goes into defrost mode • If ADC fails to go into test mode, check the bimetal When the unit goes into defrost, you should test at the heater for 120Vac. If the voltage isn't there, the control should be replaced. If the voltage is there, you either have a bad defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or a bad harness. If everything tests good but the unit just won't cycle into defrost, the thermistor or the control is at fault.
