My fridge is not self defrosting and the water replace filter light is blinking yellow. I have replaced the bi-metal already and that did not help. Although after I defrosted it, the light stayed green for 10 minutes or so before it started blinking again. What I am wondering is if the heater needs to be replaced next or the defrost control. I have read about checking the resistance on the heater, but does that need to be done at room temp or when the heater is cold?

How can you test to SEE if this is working? I have a bad control board, and I do diagnostic to start heater, but is there a way to tell that heater is working? Does this type get red hot or change visually at all? Does it make a sound?

How do I replace the heater on my side by side fridge model Kenmore 106.48212500? It's located behind the evaporate coils and seems impossible to get out.

My Whirlpool refrigerator trips the GFI outlet. It only trips the GFI 1 or 2 times a day. I'm thinking this might be defrost related. I unplugged both sides of the heating element and it stopped the GFI tripping problem. I checked the heating element and it ohmed 23.6. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

When I plug the heater in and turn the timer until it would start the heater, it blows the GFCI. With it unhooked it is fine. Blows it with only one wire on heater hooked up, also. Could heater be shorting out or possibly Bimetl-def?
