If water goes into the dishwasher when first turned on is cold. Does it warm up during the cycle? Is the heater coil what warms the water up?

My Question is: My heater coil in my dishwasher has a nice lime build up on it.Can that cause it in the drying mood to smoke, smell like a wire burning inside i know i had a spatula fall down on it during wash. But can those have the effect of a wire burning smell. I know that heater will be replaced. Thank you Mark.
