Answer Hello Scott,
The springs come installed on the assemblies. There is an underlying reason for this. You see, the heat from the appliance tends to, over time, re-temper the steel of the entire assembly. If the springs have been affected to the point of spring breakage, the rest of the assembly needs to be replaced to allow for proper door seal to cavity seating. Also, if one breaks, they should be replaced as a pair to allow the same pressure to both sides of the door. This makes the door seal seat evenly around the full length of the door seal.
This particular style of hinge does work on either side. The left one can be used on the right side and the unit will not know the difference.
