Answer Hello Joe, The shaft is impregnated with a lubricant so as it wears it actually lubricates itself. If you put a wet lubricant, lint will stick to it and cause it to fail prematurely. If you absolutely have to put something on it, you have to use a dry lubricant that won't stain the clothes such as corn starch or baby powder.
