Kenmore dryer is 12 yrs old. Has started squeaking. Took off panel to see pulley and belt. When pulling belt to rotate drum, squeak seems to come from top of drum. Belt ridges are worn, but belt seems snug. Also noticed black residue on outside of back panel. Ideas?

Does the idler arm screw and sleeve move with the idler pulley wheel or is it supposed to move freely on the sleeve? This dryer hasn't run in 9 years. The pulley wheel wasn't moving so we removed it to try to free it up. The pulley wheel moves now but so does the sleeve and screw that attaches it to the bracket.

For about six months my dryer had been making a rumbling noise when it started and then became quieter once running. I ignored it (probably a bad idea) until about a week ago when the drum would stop turning after running a while. It would start again and then stop after a while. I assume this is the motor on overload(??). I took apart and found that one of the drum support rollers was tight. I have cleaned and lubricated both rollers and they now spin freely and seem okay. My question is regarding the idler pulley wheel. With the belt off the drum this wheel is loose and floppy. When I pull up on the belt as though it is around drum it seems fine. Is that how it is supposed to be or should this be replaced? FYI, I am also replacing my blower wheel assembly as it is worn and spins freely.

What kind of bearing is in the idler pulley? How does it work? Does it spin on the shaft or does the bearing stay fixed on the shaft and spin inside itself?

I'm replacing this pulley even though it does not look worn but wondering what side needs to be inward. There is a slight bevel on one side. I've also been trying to get the belt back on but it does not want to get tight. I'm wondering if someone might have put on a wrong belt. I was getting the same ticking noise as a previous question. thanks. :-)
