My Maytag Neptune stack washer/dryer model mle2000ayw, serial # 17576263wu won't spin. Removed back panel and observed motor shaft stuttering even with belt removed. Tub rotates freely by hand. It seems from internet search that the motor P/N 6 2702230 is discontinued. Is it necessary to replace the motor and the motor control unit?

Answer Hello Mike,
You are correct. The motor conversion kit 12002039 is the part you will need to replace since the original motor control board is discontinued for repeated failures. The motor has to be replaced since the new board will not work with the old motor. Don't completely freak out over it though since the motor conversion kit is about the cost of the old board without a motor with it. instructions come with the kit.
Washer makes a grunt, grunt, grunt, while washing, sounds like something is about to go, any suggestions ?

Answer Marie, You'll need to move the washer out away from the wall and remove the back panel, and start the washer. You'll need to be very careful of the moving parts, but when the noise is made, observe the motor, it may be shifting on worn out motor mounts 22003329 causing the noise or the belt to shift and make noise. Observe the belt 12001788 on the main pulley, make sure it has not worn out and slips on the pulley Also observe the motor/belt, if there is a "studdering" appearance when the motor changes direction this would indicate an issue in the motor control board 22004473 if alls OK, then you'll need to listen closely to the main drive pulley, you may have a set of worn out or loose drum bearings.
