My 17 year old washer is having 2 issues. First, the agitator spins without much force mostly just clockwise. The agitator dogs appear worn, so I will replace those, but are there any other likely candidates for replacement? Second, when approaching full spin speed, the washer makes a loud metal-on-metal clunk that sounds a bit like skipping gears, the basket slows down or momentarily stops then regains speed. This is worse with particularly heavy or light loads. My thought with this was the transmission, but was wondering if the clutch, brake assembly, drive block, or suspension pads may need to be replaced.

My washer started making a loud clicking noise and was not spinning. I researched it online and decided to replace the motor coupler and clutch. The old motor coupler was fine but I installed the new one anyway. The broken part was the clutch brake cam (white plastic piece) . The old clutch was soaked in gearcase oil and oil was all over the gearcase exterior and some on the floor. It appears to be leaking from the input shaft seal. There is also a fair amount of play side to side in the shaft causing a gap between the shaft and the seal. Should I try to replace all of the seals in the gearcase or just replace the transmission?

Latest Questions

The washer makes a grinding noise in the spin cycle. When I bypass the lid switch & remove the agitator The noise goes away. If I hold the top of the spline shaft, the noise returns, and it feels like something is skipping on the shaft. Am I looking at a bad gearcase, or just a clutch? The agitator also tries to work as the tub is spinning.

Sir: Reference: The video showing how to replace direct drive gear case https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K45uTNYd6Nw. Directly below this video the text indicates the washer gearcase is (part #3360629). Howver, the number on the gearcase in the video at 3:48 shows 389228 on the casing. Are these two gearcases identical or equivalent? The viewer breeisbee asked the same question? -John

The gear case (transmission) on my Kenmore Direct Drive Top Load Washer is labelled 389228. What replacement do you have that can be used? It does not spin or agitate. It drains the water so the motor and motor coupler is good. Do you have to remove the basket to change the transmission? Thanks. -John
