The washer will agitate but when it reaches the spin cycle it only hums but will not spin or drain. The hum stops after a few minutes but an ozone smell remains in the air and the washer motor is very hot to the touch. The lid switch is functioning properly. I have replaced the water pump and the washer motor. The capacitor checks out properly. The drive coupler is intact. When I turn the shaft of the washer motor manually (the part of the shaft that normally engages the pump) the agitator will turn initially in one direction and then in the other, as for agitation. This happens whether I turn the motor shaft clockwise or counterclockwise. I can manually (from inside) spin the porcelain drum within the tub. What should I check or replace next?

I ordered a motor coupling, but while waiting for the part, I left the Whirlpool machine on its back and transmission fluid leaked out. Can I replace it?

Latest Questions

I have a loud clunk on spin cycle coming from beneath the washer. It is not spinning as efficiently but still spins fast. The clunk sounds like when the tub is out of balance with clothes but it isn't. Time for a Gearbox replacement?

This is an old Whirlpool and the tag with the model number is long gone. Washer does not agitate or spin. Pump is working (tank both fills and drains as washer goes through cycles). I can hear the motor running during what should be the agitate and spin cycles, I know the direct drive coupling is broken. Parts of it were on the floor when I moved the washer to investigate the problem. Is there any way to tell if I also need to replace the transmission or clutch assembly? What could cause the coupling to break other than the transmission freezing up? Thanks for the help!

The w/m drum does not spin in the spin cycle. I replaced the drive block but still nothing. When it is in the spin cycle if I give the drum a little assistance it will start spinning, slowly and not for long though. Transmission? Thanks
