This is an old Whirlpool and the tag with the model number is long gone. Washer does not agitate or spin. Pump is working (tank both fills and drains as washer goes through cycles). I can hear the motor running during what should be the agitate and spin cycles, I know the direct drive coupling is broken. Parts of it were on the floor when I moved the washer to investigate the problem. Is there any way to tell if I also need to replace the transmission or clutch assembly? What could cause the coupling to break other than the transmission freezing up? Thanks for the help!

The w/m drum does not spin in the spin cycle. I replaced the drive block but still nothing. When it is in the spin cycle if I give the drum a little assistance it will start spinning, slowly and not for long though. Transmission? Thanks

Latest Questions

The washer didn't spin the clothes. The tub drained, but didn't spin. I discovered that with no clothes in the machine, the drum did spin. I experimented & found that if I had 2 wet tee shirts in the machine & if I positioned the tee shirts at the outer diameter of the drum, away from the agitator, the machine would spin them dry. But it did take the machine longer than normal to come up to full spin speed. I ordered a new clutch assembly. I disassembled the machine & found that the old clutch assembly did not appear very worn, But there as oil everywhere. The brake assembly & the clutch assembly were oily. I did not find an obvious source of the oil. There was only one bolt holding the clutch in place & it was loose. I found a second bolt on the floor. Does the following plan make sense? 1. Assume that the loose bolts let the clutch shake more than it should have & it caused oil to squirt out the transmission vent. 2. Clean the oil out of the brake assembly. It seems to have been functioning. 3. Install the new clutch assembly (since I already have it). 4. Reassemble the washer with all the bolts in place. See how it works. Thank you for your help. Washer fills, agitates, empties, and all the rest, just won't spin. No high speed spin, no low speed spin. No spin during rinse nor the spin only. Replaced clutch assembly already. Any ideas??

Washer makes a whining noise only during the spin cycle. I have disassembled the washer and there is considerable slack/movement in the shaft coming out of the transmission to the tub. Is this normal or is the bearing in the transmission shot?
