I have a 1989 WHirlpool LA7780XSN1 model washing machine that occasionally (although it is becoming more repeatable)makes a grinding noise during the spin cycle. I can override the tab on the lid to watch it spin and what is happening is the agitator will appear to engage briefly resulting in a grinding noise. It quickly stops for a moment and may not happen again or it may happen over and over during the spin cycle. The agitator works fine during the wash cycle. My guess is it needs a transmission based on you tube videos commentary etc. that I have watched. What are your thoughts and which transmission is correct for my model? thanks

I've noticed a rattling, loose gear kind of sound during the mid wash and rinse cycles lately, also noticed some rusty water dripping out from under the agitator. I took off the agitator and the seal for the dust cap was broken and the agitator bolt was rusty so assume replacing the seal will prevent rusty particles from reaching the tub. All else looks good. what could be causing the noisy gears. Do I need a new transmission?

Washer makes a high pitched whining noise when on spin cycle. Just changed clutch but still makes a lot of noise. Could it be low on oil because seems to be some oil on floor.

My washer spins but will not spin fast enough to get the water out of the clothes. The pump works and I have replaced the clutch. Does it need a new transmittion?

What test can I do on my old gearbox to determine whether or not it is bad? On my old gearbox, I can spin the input shaft (motor coupler) and see the output shaft turn; one direction spins the outer drum shaft, the other direction spins the agitator slowly back and forth. However, I can hold the output shafts still with my hand and continue to spin the input shaft. Does that mean that my gearbox is bad, or is it supposed to do that?
