What does the pressure switch do that attaches to the pump?

My Maytag Neptunr washer Mod: MAH5500BWQ will not finish the spin cycle unless I lay the hose close to flat to the ground. I replaced the pump and the problem is still the same. What does the Pressure switch do that attaches to the pump. My door locks and the light comes on. It will just leave water in the bottom of the drum unless I lower the hose. Any help please?
