The washer won't agitate but will drain water and will spin. I do get that burning smell or either belts or motor. Not sure if replacing the belts is the problem or not.
Answer Jean, You'll need to replace the belts, but first you need to determine if you need a transmission. Remove the front panel, Raise the front of the washer and block it up so it can't fall. reach under the machine and remove both belts. Grasp the transmission pulley and turn it clockwise, the transmission and tub should spin. Then turn the pulley counter clockwise the pulley should turn relatively easy and the agitator should oscillate back and forth, if the pulley won't turn or the agitator doesn't oscillate, you have a failed transmission.
My Maytag washer will not agitate, spin or empty the water. Is this the drive belt and pump belt that will cause this? Worked fine last time I did wash. Thanks
The first thing to check would be the lid switch on the unit. If the lid switch checks ok then you will want to check the pump and see if it spins freely. If not then the pump is faulty and would need to be replaced.
Before the unit will enter the spin cycle I have to remove some clothed before it will spin effectively. Do I need to replace the belts?
You will want to check the belts for being stretched and not pulley properly. Also check the drain pump to ensure that it is not clogged and keeping the unit from draining properly.
