How to replace tub seal?
Answer Repairguy, You will need to slide the washer out, a few inches, unplug the power cord, remove the front panel and raise the top. Remove the tub cover carefully (8 clips that attach to fasteners molded into the outer tub assembly) and check the cover gasket for debris and damage. Remove the agitator(there is a special tool) but you may be able to force the agitator off the drive bell using your fingers under the outer edge or a small rope or belt to break the agitator loose and up from the drive bell. Partially remove the bolt, plug and "O" ring , holding the drive bell to the agitator output shaft, (You may need a gear puller to remove the drive bell from the shaft) but once the bell is loose, you will remove the bolt etc.,and remove the bell from the shaft. Remove the spin basket mouning screws and spin basket and you now have access to the hub and seal assembly.Remove hub seal by placing a flat blade screwdriver between the bottom edge of the seal and hub using the washtub bolts as a "pry" area to pop off the lower seal bead. Then grasp the seal and pull staright up freeing the upper seal bead. Remove the large hex nut using a large crescent or small pipe wrench(be careful, do not damage the threads on the nut or housing)Remove the spline insert if necessary. Remove the tub hub, from splines on the transmission tube, and remove seal from outer tub.
When you start the re construction, use a small bead of "3M 800" sealant on the mounting surface of the outer tub flange and a dab of "vaseline" on the bronze surafce of the seal and the outer surface of the stell sleeve.(you may also want to install a small bead of sealant around the seal bottom to tub junction as a safeguard. You may want to consider a seal kit R9900552 instead of just the seal, you'll be well covered in case of an accident. Thanks and Good Luck
