I unhooked this fridge about a year ago but did not drain any water lines, when I pluged it in it worked fine and was running for about a month, this was before hooking up any water line. when I hooked up the water line I got water everywhere. It started smoking so I unpluged it. I seen the water inlet was broken and ordered one from you and replaced it. I decided to plug it in again before I hook up the water line to see that the fridge was still working (this is after sitting for about 3 weeks). It started smoking then it quit and the fridge seem to work fine. So I unpluged it again just to see if when I pluged it in again if it would smoke again. (this whole time I thought it was the fan smoking) It again started smoking but this time I saw the start-dev light up and saw the smoke was coming from there, but again it stopped and fridge seem to work fine. I tried unpluging again to see what it would do when I plugged it in, this time I saw a flame comming from the bottom of the Start-Dev so I unpluged it and took the part off to see what it looked like, it of course was fried. My question is that is hooked to the run capacitor, will that also be bad or is that what caused the fire in the Start- Dev? is there a way to test the run capacitor? I dont want to buy one if this one is not bad. but I dont want to just buy the Start-Dev if it is going to burn up again if the run capacitor is what is bad and causing the Start- Dev to get to hot.

Answer Hello Kevin. The run capacitor is fine on the unit. The issue is the start device 2188831. When they wear out, they tend to burn out. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like you need to order and replace the start device on the unit.

I had an electrical burning smell coming from the refrigerator and now only the fan is running in the freezer. This happened about a year ago and I had a repairman come out and he replaced what I believe is called a "starter device". I have removed the part that he replaced and examined it. It does not have the burn marks like the old one did and when I shake it there is no rattle as there was when the old one went bad. I suspect that he may have put a used one in and I really dont care, I just want to repair this myself but I dont want to order the "starter device" if that is not the problem. Any suggestions? BTW, I am electronically inclined (I work on computers and copiers)however my knowledge of refrigerators is limited.

Answer Hello Jim. You can test the start device 2188831 for continuity. It should read closed across each terminal point. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Hello, My entire fridge unit does not cool anymore. The bottom coils are clean, the condenser fan comes on. I noticed a clicking sound from the compressor which I have not noticed before.
