My Whirlpool washing machine properly drains the water out of the tub. But after the pump stops the water that is in the drain hose runs back into the machine filling the tub with about an inch of nasty water that ends up getting old and smelly. What is supposed to prevent the water from returning into the tub?

This Kenmore washer starts to fill with water, and reaches approximately 1/3 full before water starts flowing out of the drain (it may flow earlier, but the water level still rises). It doesn't seem to matter what water level (manual selection via knob) or cycle/water temp is chosen. It spins and pumps fine. We just purchased it used, and I'm wondering if I damaged something while moving it.

My washer will not drain water from tub, washes ok. Would I be onthe right track to assume that the likely fault would be the drain protector? Further what is the purpose of the syphon breaker?
