What is the function of the thermistor in my Maytag gas dryer? Is it just a temp probe, or does it also control the heat? It mounts right next to the cycling thermostat, at the exit of the blower. Also, should a gas or electric dryer of the same brand and type dry the same load in the same amount of time?

It takes forever to dry our laundry. I cleaned out all the lint from everywhere, including the duct and dryer vent and checked its operation. The flame comes on for 14 seconds then turns of for 1-2 minutes. This happens continually. I checked the fuse and it has continuity. I checked the thermistor and it has 9.5k ohms at room temp. Is it a solenoid problem or do I need to check something else?

My dryer heats intermittently. At one point when I noticed the clothes were damp I smelled slight gas smell. I noticed that the igniter glows and within a few seconds a blue flame comes on and then 15 seconds later the igniter starts loosing its glow. Is this normal? What do you think is causing this intermittent heating?
