How do I test my thermostat to see if it is bad? Could a bad thermostat cause the drain hose to freeze up?

Would like to know at what temp the thermostat is supposed to turn on and off. This would help with my diagnosis. It defrosts when it is supposed too but in between still gets to 44 before it turns on. Thanks for your time and answers. Al

Have ordered the part you recommended and will install it. Am still wondering why the water drains to the pan under the frig when it defrosts one time but not the next? It gurgles but no water? Is that normal? Sometimes not much frost or what? frig is warmer inside than it should be(41deg) and freezer is 0 or less. Will the part I ordered (TIMER) make any difference? Or could it be something else? THANKS Al

Thank you for your help on the cold control; it seems to be ok. I'm wondering now about the defrost controls. Sometimes the defrost goes on and water runs in the pan under the unit. At other times when it kicks in I hear the gurgling but no water comes into the pan. Should it be this way? Also when it goes into the defrost mode it takes more than 30 minutes and the fresh food compartment warms up to 46°F. The freezer is still ok at 20°F. Could the timer only start the heater every other time or what? Look forward to hearing back. Thanks a bunch! Al
