If replacing therostat and/or heating element...do you do this by removing back of dryer? If so, is it best to put dryer face down on the floor or low table?
Dan for Model Number Whirlpool LDR3822HQ1
Answer Hello Dan. Yes, you will remove the back of the dryer to access the heater 3403591 and the thermostat 3404153. You can do this by pulling out the dryer and removing the back panel. You do not need to lay the dryer down. Make sure the power is disconnected from the unit. Hope this helps.
Sometimes my dryer gets very warm and dries close reasonable well. Other times not getting hot at all. Does this indicate thermostat or heating element? Thanks

Answer Dan, The first thing to do is run the dryer with the vent disconnected. You could have a restricted, clogged exhaust vent system causing the dryer to cycle on the hi limit safety thermostat. From there you could visually check all the wiring to all the thermostats and heater element for loose connections or damaged wires. But it's best to circuit check the components with a multimeter TJMA-DMT3 . The more likely situation is a bad hi limit thermostat or a loose or weak connection at the heater element. Good Luck and Thanks.
If my dryer isn't getting hot, what part do I need to buy?

Answer Hello Anthony. You will need to test and see if the high limit 3404153 or the heater 3403591 is bad. They should read closed for continuity. If they are open, you will need to replace that part. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter.
