My freezer doesn't seem to be that cold any more. What could be the problem? I cleaned the coils on the bottom.
Answer Hello Todd,
This could be a variety of things that can cause the same complaint. You need to look at the back wall of the unit for a frost build-up. If there is a frost build-up, you have a defrost issue which can be caused by a bad defrost thermostat R0161087, a bad defrost heater 12049801, or a bad adaptive defrost control 12050506. The most common failure of the three is the defrost thermostat. If it fails, you also will not have a freezer fan motor running. This is easily verified without even using a test meter. If you look closely at the top edge of the defrost thermostat, most of the time when it is bad you will be able to see where the insides are bulging up like they are trying to get out. This is where moisture has gotten into the device and when the moisture expanded, it pushed the insides up. If it looks good, you need to test the evaporator fan motor for 120Vac. As long as the defrost thermostat is good and cold, the fan motor should run. If there is no voltage getting to any of these components, the culprit is under the front of the unit behind the kick panel, (the adaptive defrost control). This is an electronic control board. It is responsible for putting the unit into and out of defrost.
If none of the fore-mentioned situations are the situation, you should make sure the fan motor behind the unit is running. This is called the condenser fan. It carries heat removed from inside the unit away from the condenser coils. Please let us know what you find as it helps to have more information to diagnose a refrigeration situation.
What wires plug into each other? There are no directions, Thanks.
Answer Hello George,
This is a rather odd defrost thermostat. Amana designed it and the longest terminals were meant to stick through the rear of the unit as a test point. I always just wrap the wires up and tie them in with the other wiring. You only need to connect two wires. These are obvious when you remove the old one. One goes to the fan motor and the other to the defrost heater.
