My washer stopped between cycles and started to smell like a hot electrical smell and wouldn't continue. I turned the timer clockwise 360° and it worked fine. Should I replace the timer? Thanks

We have a Kenmore washer/dryer combo and I replaced the timer thinking that this would help. My machine at first was stopping on the rinse cycle with the water in the tub and would not drain. In fact, the timer would stop ticking forward. It would do this on all three setting. It just will not drain. I took my clothes from the washer, and drained the tub by hand. Restarted the cycle for wash and when in got to the rinse and drain, same thing, will not drain. I don't mind working on my machine, but this is a puzzle to me. Can you advise?
