My refrigerator is working fine, both sides. It freezes well and the refrigerator keeps stuff cold. The problem is that it leaks and the bottom of the freezer sometimes builds up ice. I have been told to replace the defrost timer. Does this sound right?

My freezer is not defrosting. I measured the heater element (24ohms)not shorted, thermostat room temp(236 ohms), thermostat in a cup of Ice with water(234 ohms). To do this, I placed a straight pin through the wire sleeve between the element and the thermostat. Is this the proper test procedure for this assembly, if so is it good? How can I test the defrost timer? there are 4 pins. What readings should I be getting, and across which pins. Also is there anything else that could be causing this problem?
