Recently the washer has sounded like a small airplane taking off during spin cycles and now it just won't spin out at all. The water drains but the clothes are still soaked obviously. I have been asking around and have been told it is probably the clutch. I just called a parts place and it seems that there is no "clutch available" for this model and that I would have to buy the transmission assembly. Do you think that would fix the problem and how difficult is this to change out - I am somewhat mechanically inclined.
Answer Marcy, If the washer fills and agitates, it's not likely a transmission problem. The "has sounded like a small airplane taking off during spin cycles"would more likely be due to a worn and noisy tub bearing, which will require a 12001598 tub bearing / seal kit, and the no spin and for general purposes you'll most likely want or need to replace the thrust bearing kit 12002213 in order to maintain and properly drive the transmission and tub in the spin cycle. Both parts are relatively easy to replace, if you have a basic knowledge of mechanics. The specialty tools are no longer available, so you'll need to use a pipe wrench and or chisel and hammer to remove the tub seal assembly, but that's not a "big deal". Sounds like you could handle it.
Do you need to use the new agitator with this transmission or can you use the original one?
Answer Hello Greg. You will need to use the new agitator and everything that is sent with the transmission kit 12002177 when doing the repair. Hope this helps.
