Everytime I turn on my oven I smell gas. I had the gas company come out and check it and they said it COULD be the safety valve. Before I replace the valve could this be the problem?

My oven and broiler will not ignite. The burners ignite just fine. At first I thought it was the igniter so I replaced it with a new one. A couple of weeks ago we did notice the clock on the oven control panel was not on. We went back a couple of hours later and noticed it was blinking dimly. Now the clock seems to working fine.. In the past my wife has notice a very light gas smell from time to time. Could my problem be with the gas valve.? By putting in a new valve should that fix my problem?
