What does the OE error code mean?

The OE error on Samsung top-load washers stands for Overflow Error and usually means that there’s an issue with the water level detection system in the machine. This may happen if there’s a clogged drain, a problem with the water supply or an issue with the water level sensor.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.

How to troubleshoot an OE error on a top-loading Samsung washer

Follow these steps to clear the OE fault code from your top-load Samsung washing machine.

Step 1: Check the drain hose

  1. Unplug the washer from the power outlet.
  2. Turn off the water supply to the washer.
  3. Find the drain hose at the back of the washing machine.
  4. Disconnect the drain hose and check for any clogs or blockages.
  5. Clear out any debris or buildup in the drain hose as needed.
  6. Flush the drain hose with water to make sure it’s completely cleared.
  7. If the drain hose is in good condition, reconnect it to the washing machine.

Replace the drain hose if it’s damaged.

Step 2: Inspect the water level sensor

  1. Remove the 6 screws that hold the control panel assembly.
  2. Lift the cover panel upward. If it’s difficult to lift, use a flathead screwdriver to disengage the left and right hooks. Be careful not to damage the hooks.
  3. Remove the 2 screws on either side at the bottom that hold the front of the control panel assembly on and turn the panel over.
  4. Check the sensor connections to make sure they’re not damaged and firmly plugged in.

If the sensor is damaged, replace it with a new one.

Step 3: Check the water inlet valve

  1. Make sure the water supply to the washing machine is off.
  2. Disconnect the water supply lines from the back of the washer.
  3. Inspect the water supply valve for any signs of blockage or freezing.
  4. If the valve is clogged, use compressed air or a small brush to clean it. If the valve is frozen, allow it to thaw completely before reconnecting the water supply lines.
  5. Turn the water supply back on and check for any leaks.

If the water inlet valve is damaged, replace it with a new one.
