What the error code means

The E13 error code on a Bosch front load washer indicates a “Drain pump time exceeded” issue. This error code is displayed when the washer is unable to drain the water within the designated time frame. This can be caused by various factors, such as a problem with the drain pump, a blockage in the drain hose or drain line, or a malfunction in the control module.

The E13 error code serves as a diagnostic tool to help identify the general area of concern, allowing you to pinpoint and resolve the problem.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.
  • Take pictures or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting to prevent any problems with reassembly.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.

Troubleshooting steps

Check the drain hose

  1. Check the drain hose for any kinks, clogs, or blockages.
  2. Ensure the drain hose is properly installed and not kinked or obstructed.
  3. Clear any blockages or replace the drain hose if necessary.

Test the drain pump

  1. Unplug the washer or disconnect the power.
  2. Remove the front panel of the washer to access the internal components.
  3. Locate the drain pump. It is typically located at the bottom of the washer.
  4. Disconnect the wire harness from the drain pump.
  5. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the drain pump.
  6. The resistance should be between 140-200 ohms.
  7. If the resistance is outside of this range, the drain pump is faulty and needs to be replaced.
  8. If the drain pump resistance is within the normal range, reconnect the wire harness and turn the power back on.
  9. Run a drain cycle and observe the operation of the drain pump.

Test for voltage

LIVE VOLTAGE WARNING: For this test, the appliance needs to be plugged in and powered on. Please be very careful to protect yourself from electric shock, which has the potential to cause serious injuries. Don’t ever test live voltage if you’re uncomfortable using a multimeter.

  1. If the pump is not running at all, check the voltage output to the drain pump when it is energized.
  2. To check the voltage output, use a multimeter to measure for 120v ac at the drain pump connector when the pump should be running.
  3. If there is no voltage output, the control module is likely faulty and needs to be replaced.
  4. If the voltage output is normal, but the pump is not running, the pump motor may have failed, and the drain pump will need to be replaced.

Check the wiring harness

  1. If the drain pump checks out, inspect the wiring harness connecting the pump to the control module.
  2. Visually inspect the wiring for any damage, fraying, or loose connections.
  3. Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the wiring harness. There should be no breaks in the wiring.
  4. Replace the wiring harness if any issues are found.
