Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.
  • Take pictures or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting to prevent any problems with reassembly.

Testing process

 Step 1: Disassembly

  1. Pull the refrigerator out from the wall to access the rear panel.
  2. Remove the four 1/4″ screws that hold the lower cover in place.
  3. Carefully remove the lower access cover to access the compressor and start device.

Step 2: Test the start device

LIVE VOLTAGE WARNING: For this test, the appliance needs to be plugged in and powered on. Please be very careful to protect yourself from electric shock, which has the potential to cause serious injuries. Don’t ever test live voltage if you’re uncomfortable using a multimeter.

  1. Set your multimeter to measure VAC.
  2. Locate the red and blue wires connected to the start device.
  3. Place one multimeter lead on the red wire and the other lead on the blue wire.
  4. Observe the voltage reading. You should see approximately 120 VAC.

Step 3: Test the compressor

  1. If you have 120 VAC at the start device, the next step is to check the compressor’s resistance.
  2. Use your multimeter to measure the resistance between the compressor terminals.
  3. If the start device is receiving 120 VAC but the compressor is functioning properly, the start device is most likely faulty and needs to be replaced.
  4. Disconnect the wiring from the old start device and remove it from the compressor.
  5. Install the new start device, making sure to reconnect the wiring correctly.
  6. Secure the new start device in place, taking care to reinstall any wire clips or retainers.

Step 4: Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the lower access cover and secure it with the four 1/4″ screws.
  2. Carefully push the refrigerator back into its original position.
