Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or its parts. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Shut off the gas supply to prevent any gas leaks while you work.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to test and replace the Samsung range’s convection heat element

Below are the steps to test, remove, and replace the convection heat element in a Samsung range to restore proper oven functionality.

Step 1. Test the convection heat element

LIVE VOLTAGE WARNING: For this test, the appliance needs to be plugged in and powered on. Please be very careful to protect yourself from electric shock, which has the potential to cause serious injuries. Don’t ever test live voltage if you’re uncomfortable using a multimeter.

  1. Unplug the range or turn off the circuit breaker to cut power to the appliance.
  2. Pull the range away from the wall and remove the Phillips head screws securing the back panel. Set the panel aside.
  3. Locate the convection heater terminals and disconnect both connectors.
  4. Set a multimeter to AC voltage mode and insert a probe into each terminal plug.
  5. Plug the range back in or turn the breaker on.
  6. Set the oven to convection bake and monitor the voltage reading.
  7. If the multimeter displays 240 VAC, but the element does not heat, the element must be replaced. If no voltage is detected, inspect the wiring, as the control board may need replacement.
  8. With the connections removed, set the multimeter to ohms and measure the resistance across the two terminals. A functional element should read between 70-73 ohms.

Step 2. Remove the convection heat element

  1. Unplug the range or switch off the breaker before proceeding.
  2. Take out the Phillips head screws and set the back panel aside for access.
  3. Pull off the connectors from the element.
  4. Open the oven, push the door catches down, lift the door upward, and remove it for better access.
  5. Remove all racks from the oven to clear space for removal.
  6. Unscrew and remove the lower fan cover inside the oven.
  7. Remove the two screws securing the element in place.
  8. Carefully pull the convection heat element straight out.

Step 3. Install the new convection heat element

  1. Align the replacement convection heat element in place.
  2. Use the two screws to fasten the new element.
  3. Secure the lower fan cover back in place.
  4. Slide the racks back into position inside the oven.
  5. Position the door properly, push the catches back into place, and test for smooth operation.
  6. At the back of the range, connect the wiring to the new element.
  7. Secure the panel by tightening the Phillips head screws.

Step 4. Test the new element

  1. Plug the range back in or turn the breaker on.
  2. Turn on convection bake mode to verify the new element is working.
  3. A slight odor may be present during the first use, but this will fade over time.
