Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
- Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
- Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
- Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.
- Take pictures or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting to prevent any problems with reassembly.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.
Remove old dispenser cover overlay
- Warm overlay glue with a heat gun. Turn the heat gun on a high setting and wave across the overlay for 2-3 minutes. This softens the adhesive so the overlay will detach more easily. Caution: prolonged heat can warp or damage overlay.
- Insert utility knife blade under the corner of overlay. With glue warmed, you can carefully insert the tip of the utility knife under the overlay corner or edge.
- Slowly cut overlay away from cover. Keep utility knife flat against cover and gently slice overlay away, working around the perimeter. Go slowly to avoid damaging the dispenser cover.
- Peel overlay away. Once fully cut free from edges, peel and lift off the old dispenser overlay which should now come free with ease.
- Remove any excess old glue. Use a utility knife, plastic scraper, or adhesive remover to thoroughly remove leftover glue from the dispenser cover surface. This prepares a clean slate for the new overlay installation.
Install new dispenser cover overlay
Once the old overlay is removed and adhesive residue eliminated, installing the new replacement dispenser cover overlay is simple.
Note: It’s crucial to take care when positioning the overlay to make sure the buttons and labels align correctly on the dispenser cover.
- Peel back outer protective film. The new overlay has a protective clear plastic film over the front adhesive layer. Slowly peel this back from top to bottom to expose the glue strip. Do not fully remove the film yet.
- Line up overlay on right side of dispenser. Carefully insert the exposed adhesive strip on the new overlay against the far right side of dispenser cover. Make sure the overlay is evenly aligned before proceeding.
- Gradually remove remaining protective film. Maintaining alignment, slowly peel off the rest of the protective film from the overlay, lightly adhering overlay as you work from right to left. Smooth any bubbles or wrinkles as you go.
- Press firmly to seal the overlay in place. Once fully positioned, apply firm even pressure across the entire overlay surface to securely bond to the dispenser cover.
- Carefully peel and discard the top clear film (optional). The new overlay may have a second clear protective layer on its top surface. Removing this final film provides an ultra-clear, bright finish across the control labels.
- Verify refrigerator and dispenser are functioning. Plug unit back in and confirm interior light turns on and normal cooling resumes. Test dispenser buttons, and make sure the water/ice features work properly.
- Clean work area. Wipe up any dust or debris and return tools and leftover materials to their proper storage Places.
That completes this DIY refrigerator repair job! With a bit of time and effort, you can save the cost of professional service and refresh your Frigidaire dispenser controls on your own.
