- Standpipe height: the top of the standpipe should be at least about 39 inches (991 mm) from the floor and no higher than about 96 inches (2.44 m) from the bottom of the washer. The 96-inch figure is the tallest column of water the drain pump is rated to lift. Whirlpool states this as a drain height between 39 inches (991 mm) and 8 feet (2.4 m) in its top-load washer technical manual and 27-inch laundry center service manual. - Insertion depth: the drain hose should not extend more than about 4.5 inches (114 mm) into the standpipe or drainpipe, or you risk a sealed fit that lets the washer siphon. Whirlpool puts it plainly: the drain hose “must not be more than 4.5″ (114 mm) into the drain pipe.”
- Keep an air gap: the hose should be secure but loose in the standpipe, never sealed airtight, so air can break the siphon.
- Total added length: Whirlpool’s published limits are the height (96 inches) and the insertion depth, not a horizontal length. As a practical rule, keep the total run short and the washer close to the drain; a long horizontal hose holds standing water and raises the odds of slow drainage and odor.
Why does an over-extended hose cause problems?
Because it either siphons the water back or overworks the pump. Three failure modes come from ignoring the limits:
- Siphoning: if the hose is pushed too far in or sealed airtight, water drains continuously by siphon action, so the tub empties mid-cycle and the washer keeps refilling. This is the most common extension mistake.
- Slow or incomplete draining: raise the standpipe above the pump’s rated height and the pump cannot fully clear the water, leaving clothes soaking.
- Standing water and odor: an over-long horizontal run holds stagnant water in the low spots of the hose, which turns into a smell over time.

How do I extend a washer drain hose?
Work with the washer unplugged and the water off, and keep the height and insertion rules in mind.
- Unplug the washer and pull it out far enough to reach the drain hose connection.
