How to Replace Worn Drum Rollers in Your Dryer

A dryer that starts thumping, squeaking, or rumbling like there’s a pair of sneakers bouncing around inside, even when there isn’t, may be trying to tell you something. Worn drum rollers can make plenty of noise, but ignoring them can also put extra strain on the belt, motor, and other moving parts. Fortunately, replacing worn rollers is a manageable DIY repair that can quiet things down and help prevent a relatively small problem from turning into a pile of broken parts. With some basic tools, a little patience, and the right replacement rollers, you can get the drum spinning smoothly again.

What Drum Rollers Do and Why They Wear Out

Most dryers use two or four small wheels, drum rollers, to support the rear of the drum as it spins. Some models also have rollers near the front. These rollers sit on metal shafts and spin freely, letting the drum rotate smoothly with minimal friction.

Over time, the rubber or plastic on the rollers wears flat, develops flat spots, or cracks. The roller shaft can also get dry and gummed up. Once that happens, the drum no longer glides; it drags, wobbles, and makes noise. We’ve pulled rollers out of dryers that were completely oval-shaped from wear. At that point, the drum is literally bouncing around on every rotation. That extra vibration chews up belts, stresses the motor, and can even score the inside of the dryer cabinet.

The key thing to know: drum rollers always wear together. Even if only one looks bad, replace them all at the same time. If you replace just one, the newer roller will sit slightly higher or firmer than the others, creating an uneven surface that accelerates wear on the fresh part. Roller kits are inexpensive and save you from tearing the dryer apart again a month later.

Signs Your Drum Rollers Need Replacing

  • A rhythmic thumping or banging sound while the dryer runs

  • A squealing or squeaking noise, especially when the dryer first starts

  • The drum is hard to turn by hand, or feels wobbly when you spin it

  • Visible flat spots, cracks, or chunks missing from the rollers

  • A burning rubber smell during operation

  • The dryer vibrates more than it used to

Tools You’ll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver

  • 5/16” nut driver or socket

  • Flathead screwdriver or putty knife

  • Work gloves

  • Vacuum with a crevice attachment (trust us on this one)

No multimeter needed for this job; it’s a mechanical repair, not electrical. But you absolutely must unplug the dryer or kill the breaker before starting. Electric dryers run on 240 volts, and gas dryers have 120-volt components plus an open gas line. Neither one is something you want to mess with while live.

If you have a gas dryer, shut off the gas supply valve behind the unit before pulling it away from the wall.

Step-by-Step: Replacing the Drum Rollers

The exact disassembly varies a bit depending on whether you have a Whirlpool-style dryer (top and front panel come off), a GE-style (front panel comes off), or a Samsung/LG-style (different clip and screw locations). But the overall approach is the same. Here’s the process for the most common configuration, which covers Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, Amana, and similar models.

  1. Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall. If it’s gas, shut the gas valve off too.

  2. Remove the lint filter and the screws beneath it. On most models, there are two Phillips-head screws inside the lint trap housing that hold the top panel down.

  3. Pop the top panel. Slide a putty knife or flathead screwdriver into the seam between the top panel and the front panel, about two inches from each corner. Press in to release the spring clips, then lift the top and lean it back against the wall.

  4. Disconnect the door switch wires. Take a quick photo with your phone first so you remember which wire goes where. Then unplug the connector.

  5. Remove the front panel. There are usually two screws at the top corners holding the front panel to the cabinet frame. Remove them, then lift the front panel slightly and pull it toward you. Set it aside carefully; the door is heavy.

  6. Release the belt and lift the drum out. You’ll see the drum belt wrapped around the drum, looped under an idler pulley, and connected to the motor shaft. Reach underneath, push the idler pulley to release tension, and slip the belt off the motor shaft. Now you can lift the drum straight out of the cabinet. This is the heaviest part of the job; the drum is awkward but manageable. If you’re working alone, tilt it toward you and walk it out.

  7. Now you have full access to the rollers. They’re mounted on shafts at the rear of the cabinet (and sometimes on a front bulkhead). Each roller is held in place by a tri-ring clip, C-clip, or a small retaining washer on the shaft. Pop the clip off with a flathead screwdriver, then slide the roller and any washers off the shaft.

  8. Clean the roller shafts. This step matters. Use a rag to wipe down each shaft. If there’s buildup or rust, a little fine sandpaper cleans it right up. You want the new rollers to spin freely.

  9. While you’re in there, vacuum everything. The inside of a dryer cabinet collects an alarming amount of lint, especially around the blower housing and behind the drum. A crevice attachment makes quick work of it. This alone can improve drying performance and reduce fire risk.

  10. Install the new rollers. Slide each roller onto its shaft, add any washers that came in your kit, and snap the retaining clip back on. Give each roller a spin with your finger; it should turn freely and smoothly.

  11. Reinstall the drum. Set the drum back into the cabinet, resting it on the new rollers. Loop the belt around the drum (flat side against the drum surface, ribbed side out), then thread it under the idler pulley and around the motor shaft in a zigzag pattern. If you’re doing a drum belt replacement at the same time, which isn’t a bad idea if your belt is showing wear, this is the moment to put the new one on.

  12. Reassemble in reverse. Front panel on, screws in, door switch reconnected, top panel snapped down, lint trap screws replaced. Plug it back in (and turn the gas valve back on if applicable).

Here’s what catches most people off guard: getting the belt routed correctly on reassembly. If the drum won’t spin or the motor hums and stalls, the belt is probably not seated right on the idler pulley. Pull the front panel back off and double-check. It happens to everyone the first time.

Testing Your Repair

Run the dryer on a timed cycle with no clothes in it for five to ten minutes. Listen carefully. You should hear smooth, quiet operation, no thumping, no squealing, no rhythmic rumble. The drum should spin evenly without wobbling.

Open the door mid-cycle and give the drum a spin by hand. It should coast smoothly and feel balanced on the rollers. If you still hear noise, open it back up and confirm every roller spins freely and the retaining clips are fully seated.

If everything sounds right, throw in a load of towels and run a normal cycle. That confirms the drum tracks properly under load. You’re done.
