If you have a dryer with a mechanical timer, a worn or faulty timer may prevent the appliance from moving through the selected cycle or shutting off at the right time. Fortunately, replacing a dryer timer is a fairly approachable DIY repair that doesn’t require tearing the entire machine apart. With a few basic tools and the right replacement part, you can swap out the old timer and get your dryer back to running on schedule.

What the Dryer Timer Does

The timer is the brain behind your dryer’s cycle. It’s a mechanical or electromechanical device mounted behind the control panel, connected to the knob you turn to select a cycle. Inside that small housing is a set of cams and electrical contacts driven by a tiny motor. As the timer motor turns, those cams open and close different circuits, starting the drum motor, engaging the heater, running the cool-down cycle, and eventually shutting everything off.

When any of those internal contacts wear out, or the timer motor dies, the whole sequence falls apart. The dryer might heat but never stop, tumble without heat, or refuse to start entirely. Because the timer controls so many circuits, a single failure inside it can show up in a lot of different ways.

Signs Your Dryer Timer Has Failed

Watch for these common symptoms:

  • The dryer runs continuously and never shuts off on a timed cycle

  • The timer knob doesn’t advance during the cycle; it stays stuck in one position

  • Turning the knob produces no response at all; the dryer won’t start

  • The dryer heats but won’t transition to the cool-down or fluff cycle

  • Certain cycle selections work fine while others do nothing

  • You hear a faint humming from behind the console, but the cycle doesn’t progress

If your dryer still tumbles and heats normally on every setting but clothes come out damp, the timer probably isn’t your issue; that’s more likely an airflow or drum belt concern. But if the cycle behavior itself is erratic or stuck, start with the timer.

Tools You’ll Need

This job doesn’t require much:

  • Phillips-head screwdriver

  • Flathead screwdriver or putty knife (for releasing console clips on some models)

  • Multimeter

  • Smartphone or quick sketch pad (to photograph wiring before disconnecting)

  • Small container for screws

A multimeter isn’t strictly required if the timer is visibly burned or the motor is clearly dead, but it takes the guesswork out of the diagnosis. We always recommend confirming the failure before ordering a part.

Before you touch anything, unplug the dryer from the wall. If it’s a gas dryer, you don’t need to disconnect the gas line for this repair; you’re only working at the top console, but the power absolutely needs to be off.

How to Test the Timer Before Replacing It

Here’s what catches most people off guard: a bad timer can look perfectly fine from the outside. The knob turns, nothing is cracked or melted, and yet the dryer doesn’t do what it’s expected. That’s because the failure is usually internal: a worn contact or a seized timer motor. A quick multimeter check tells you everything you need to know.

  1. Unplug the dryer.

  2. Open or remove the control console (details in the replacement steps below; you’ll need access to the back of the timer).

  3. Unplug the dryer. Take a photo first, so you know exactly where every wire goes.

  4. Locate the timer motor terminals. On most dryers, these are a pair of terminals separate from the main contact bank. Your dryer’s wiring diagram, usually stuck to the inside of the front panel or inside the console, will identify them.

  5. Set your multimeter to resistance (ohms) and touch the probes to the timer motor terminals. You should see a reading in the range of 2,000 to 3,000 ohms. If you get an open reading (OL) or zero, the timer motor winding is shot.

  6. You can also check individual contact circuits the same way, switching the timer knob to positions where those contacts should be closed. A closed contact should read near zero ohms. An open circuit where there should be continuity confirms a bad contact set.

Replacing the Dryer Timer Step by Step

Once you’ve confirmed the timer is the problem, the actual swap is quick. The trickiest part is usually getting the console open the first time, after that, it’s screws and plugs.

  1. Unplug the dryer. Yes, we’re repeating this. It matters.

  2. Open the control console. On most dryers, the console is held by a couple of screws at either end, located on the back panel or hidden under end caps. Remove those screws and tilt the console forward or lift it to access the back of the timer. Some models use spring clips along the bottom edge; a putty knife slid between the console and the top panel releases them.

  3. Photograph every wire connection on the timer. This is the single most important step. Timers can have anywhere from five to ten or more wires, and getting even one in the wrong spot will cause problems. A clear photo from your phone saves you a huge headache during reassembly.

  4. Remove the timer knob from the front of the console. It usually pulls straight off. Some have a small clip or D-shaped shaft; just wiggle gently, and it’ll come free.

  5. Disconnect the wiring harness. Some timers have a single plug connector; others have individual push-on spade terminals. If they’re individual wires, label them with tape or pull them off one at a time, transferring each directly to the corresponding terminal on the new timer before moving to the next. This “one wire at a time” method is foolproof.

  6. Remove the mounting screws. The timer is typically held to a bracket inside the console by two screws. Back them out and slide the timer free.

  7. Install the new timer. Set it into the bracket and secure it with the mounting screws. Hand-tighten first to make sure alignment is right, then snug them up. Don’t over-torque; the bracket is usually light-gauge metal.

  8. Reconnect all wires to the new timer, matching your photo exactly. Push each spade connector on firmly until it clicks or seats. A loose connection here can mimic the same symptoms you just fixed.

  9. Reinstall the timer knob. Align it with the shaft and push it on. Turn it a couple of positions to make sure it engages the new timer correctly.

  10. Close the console, replace the mounting screws or snap the clips back into place, and make sure everything is seated flat.

Testing the Repair

Plug the dryer back in and run a quick test before you load it up with laundry.

  1. Turn the timer to a timed dry cycle, something short, like 20 or 30 minutes.

  2. Press start. The drum should begin tumbling and, on an electric dryer, you should feel heat within a couple of minutes.

  3. Watch the timer knob. Over the next few minutes, it should visibly advance. On most dryers, you can hear a faint click as the timer motor steps forward.

  4. Let it run through to the end. The dryer should transition into cool-down and then shut off automatically.

If the knob advances, heat cycles on and off as expected, and the dryer shuts itself off at the end, you’re done. That’s a confirmed good timer and a job well finished.
