Disclaimer: The error code information provided in this article is based on general service manuals and may not apply to your specific appliance model. While we strive to offer helpful advice for DIY appliance repairs, variations in models and configurations can lead to differences in troubleshooting steps, error codes and part replacements. For the most accurate guidance, we strongly recommend consulting the technical sheet for your specific appliance model.

What does the FC error code mean?

The FC fault code likely indicates a problem with the oven door lock switches and signals.

It typically means the control board is receiving conflicting signals from the door latch switches. One switch signal may be telling the control board the door lock is in the “lock” state, while the other switch is signaling “unlock” at the same time. This conflicting input likely means one or both of the latch position switches are malfunctioning.

Keep safety first

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Shut off the gas supply to prevent any gas leaks while you work.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.

How to troubleshoot the FC error

Follow these steps to get your GE gas range back to its normal operating self.

Step 1: Check the door latch switches

  1. Turn off the range and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Turn off the gas supply to the range.
  3. Carefully remove the oven door to access the door latch mechanism and switches.
  4. Inspect the condition of the latch hook and slots. Check for any damage or binding that could prevent smooth motion.
  5. Use a multimeter to check the continuity of each latch switch. The lock switch should show continuity (closed circuit) when the latch cam is rotated to the lock position. The unlock switch should show continuity (closed circuit) when the cam is rotated to the unlock position.

If either switch does not behave as described, then it’s defective and should be replaced.

If the switches pass testing, you’ll need to check the oven’s control board.

Step 2: Check the oven control board

  1. Make sure the oven is turned off and unplugged.
  2. Check that all the wiring harnesses are locked into the appropriate terminals on the control board.
  3. Examine the ribbon cables and terminals for any loose wires, damaged pins, or corrupted connections. If you find any damage, replace the wiring.

Step 3: Check the control board

  1. Look over all the control board wiring interfaces. If you find any damage, replace the board.
  2. If the connections are good, try power cycling the oven control board by turning off the power at the main breaker or fuse box for at least five minutes, then power it back on. The FC error should be gone.
  3. Restore power to the oven and test the door-locking function. If the FC code still shows up after resetting the board, it likely means the control board itself is defective. To be sure, you can use a multimeter to test the board’s resistance. Refer to your oven’s manual for the acceptable range of resistance. If the board’s reading is outside that range, you’ll need to replace it.
