Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
- Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to replace the spin basket/counterbalance ring
- Make sure the washer is turned off and unplugged from the power source.
- Use a 1/4-inch nut driver to remove the harness cover from the washer. The harness cover is usually located at the top of the washer, near the back.
- Remove the two hinge screws that hold the top panel to the frame.
- Pull the top panel toward the front of the washer. Lift the panel slightly, and then push it back while keeping it lifted. This will allow you to lean the top panel back against the wall. If your washer isn’t against a wall, you can use a strap or something similar to hold the top panel in place and prevent it from falling.
- Find the tub ring, which is a plastic ring around the top of the tub.
- Remove the tub ring by pulling the lock tabs away from the tub. Once the tub ring is loose, set it aside.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to lift the center cap off of the agitator.
- Use a 7/16-inch socket to remove the agitator bolt.
- Lift the agitator plate and set it aside.
- Reach into the tub with your flathead screwdriver. Use it to spin the basket or counterbalance ring until it’s loose and can be lifted out of the tub. Remove the old spin basket from the washer.
- Attach the drive hub to the new spin basket. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the drive hub screws from the old spin basket. Move the drive hub to the new spin basket and secure it with the screws.
- Place the new spin basket into the tub and align the hub with the drive shaft.
- Lock the new basket into position.
- Put the tub ring back onto the tub. Push it down firmly and make sure each tab locks onto the tub.
- Set the agitator plate onto the drive shaft and secure it with the 7/16-inch bolt.
- Install the center cap onto the agitator.
- Carefully lower the top panel back down onto the washer. Make sure it’s aligned properly.
- Pull the top panel slightly toward the front of the washer to allow it to set down the remaining distance. Then push it back to lock it in place.
- Reinstall the harness cover. Secure the cover and hinge brackets with the ¼-inch screws.
- Turn on the water supply for the washer.
- Plug your washer back in or flip the breaker switch to turn the power back on.
