How to replace GE dryer bearings WE3M52
Steven E / Tuesday April 9, 2024
The drum in your GE dryer spins on bearings that can wear out over time. As the bearings deteriorate, you may hear loud squeaking, grinding, or rattling noises when the dryer is running.
Replacing the worn bearings can help you quiet the dryer back down. This is a straightforward repair that you can tackle yourself in about an hour.
It’s recommended to replace both bearings in the pair at a time. If one is worn out, the other is also likely in the same condition. Replacing both bearings at once will save you time and money down the road.
Let’s walk through the replacement process for a GE dryer.

What are drum bearings & why are they important?
There are four drum bearings in a GE dryer that allow the drum to spin smoothly. The bearings are mounted in pairs on the top of the drum support frame. Two green bearings sit near the top while two white ones are positioned lower down.

Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
How to replace the bearing(s)
Before you start digging into the dryer, make sure it’s turned off and unplugged from the power outlet.
Step 1: Remove the dryer panels
- Open the dryer door.
- Find the screws in the top corners of the rear panel. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove them.
- Close the door and move to the back of the dryer.
- Remove the three screws along the top edge of the control panel.
- Carefully tilt the back panel forward and slide it to the left to clear the retaining tabs. Then pull it out and set it aside.
- Lift the edges of the top panel and slide it back to remove it. Set the top panel aside.
- Find the two 1/4-inch screws, one in each top corner of the front panel. Use a 1/4-inch nut driver to take these screws out.
- Remove the front panel by lifting it slightly on the dryer drum. This will let you pull the bottom of the panel away from the drum.
- Tilt the front panel forward and lift it off the bottom hinges.

Step 2: Find and remove the bad bearing
- At the top of the drum support frame, find the two sets of bearings – the green ones on top and the white ones lower down. You’ll be replacing one of the green bearings near the top.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry the worn bearing off its mounting hook.
- Take note of the retaining clip built into the bearing. Rotate it out of the hook to remove the old bearing.
- Check the tub/bearing support for damage and replace it if needed.
Step 3: Install the new bearing
- Orient the new replacement bearing with the clip side first.
- Hook the clip under the retaining protrusion.
- Rotate the clip into place by locking it onto the support frame.
- Bend the bearing around and press it into the slot, slipping it over the small metal pin to secure the new bearing.
While you have the dryer open, it’s recommended to replace both bearings in the pair. If one is worn out, the other is likely deteriorated as well.

- Slide the rear edge of the top panel first to insert the tabs into their retaining slots.
- Push down to lock the panel into place.
- Open the door to access and re-tighten the two Phillips screws.
- Line up the bottom tabs on the control panel and slide it toward the right to lock it into position.
- Re-insert and tighten the three Phillips screws along the top.
