What does the E64 error code mean?

When your Frigidaire dryer displays the error code E64, it usually means the heating element circuit is open. When the electrical circuit is interrupted, the element can’t generate the right amount of heat to dry the laundry. As a result, the dryer may fail to heat, which can cause longer drying times.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • If you have a gas model, shut off the gas supply to prevent any leaks while you work.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.

How to troubleshoot the E64 error code

Ready…get set…and follow these steps to resolve the E64 code on your Frigidaire dryer.

Step 1: Access the inside of the dryer

  1. Unplug the dryer from the power outlet.
  2. Find the screws that hold the dryer’s top panel. They’re usually at the back of the dryer. Remove the screws and lift the top panel.
  3. Depending on your specific model, you may also need to remove the front panel or the front access panel to gain access to the heating element area.

Step 2: Check the heater coils

  1. Find the heater coils and connections near the bottom of the dryer, behind the drum.
  2. Inspect the coils for any visible signs of damage, such as breaks or burns. If you find any damage, replace the coils.
  3. Check the wiring connections that lead to the heater coils. If you find any loose or disconnected wires, reseat them. If they’re damaged, replace the wiring.

If the heater coils look good, move on to the next step.

Step 3: Test the heating element coils

  1. Set a multimeter to measure resistance (Ω).
  2. Touch the multimeter probes to both ends of each heater coil terminal.
  3. Check the meter reading. A reading of infinity or OL indicates an open circuit, which means the heater coil or heating element assembly needs to be replaced. Depending on your model, the coils on the heating element might be able to be replaced separately or only available as part of a new heater assembly.
  4. Use the meter probes to check the resistance across the wiring connections leading to the heater coils. If you get an infinity or OL reading, it indicates an open circuit, which means the wiring harness needs to be replaced.

If the heating element and coils are good, you can replace the control board as a last resort.
