Got a Bosch dishwasher that’s displaying a pesky E22 error message? Don’t send your dishwasher to the dump just yet.

Your dishwasher has a filter that catches food particles and other debris to prevent them from getting into the pump and spray arms. Over time, the filter can get clogged, which can reduce the amount of water available for circulation and even cause drainage issues. When the filter is soiled, the dishwasher may display an E22 error to let you know what to check.

You’ll be happy to know that you can resolve the E22 fault code yourself without the need for an expensive service call. Let’s work through the troubleshooting steps together so you can get your dishwasher back on track.

If you find out that you need any replacement parts for your Bosch dishwasher while you’re troubleshooting, you can enter your model number at AppliancePartsPros.com to order them. Disclaimer: The error code information in this article is based on general service manuals and may not apply to your specific appliance model. While we strive to offer helpful advice for DIY appliance repairs, variations in models and configurations can lead to differences in troubleshooting steps, error codes and part replacements. For the most accurate guidance, we strongly recommend consulting the technical sheet for your specific appliance model.

What you need

  • Cleaning brush
  • Warm water
  • Mild soap

Safety precautions

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to troubleshoot the E22 error code

Check out these handy troubleshooting tips so you can get your dishwasher running smoothly again.

Step 1: Remove the filter

  1. Unplug the dishwasher from the power outlet.
  2. Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher.
  3. Pull out the lower rack of the dishwasher to access the filter. If necessary, remove the lower spray arm to give yourself more room.
  4. Rotate the filter counterclockwise until the two arrows are aligned.
  5. Pull the filter straight out to remove it, along with the screen.

Step 2: Clean the filter

  1. Separate the filter from the screen.
  2. Use an old toothbrush or other small brush to scrape off debris.
  3. Soak the filter and screen in hot soapy water to remove any remaining residue.
  4. Let the filter and screen dry thoroughly.

Step 3: Reinstall the filter

  1. Push the filter straight onto the screen.
  2. Seat the filter back into its compartment.
  3. Rotate the filter clockwise until the arrows line up.
  4. If removed, reattach the lower spray arm.
  5. Place the lower rack back into the dishwasher.
  6. Plug the dishwasher back in and turn on the water supply.
  7. See if the E22 error is still displayed on the machine. If it is and the dishwasher drains normally, replace the control board as a last resort.

How to prevent the E22 error

Follow these tips to maintain your dishwasher and prevent the E22 error code from showing up again.

  • Clean the cup filter after each wash cycle.
  • Don’t let the drain hose become clogged or kinked. Check the hose regularly and straighten any kinks or blockages.
  • Run a sanitize or cleaning cycle with vinegar or a dishwasher cleaner every 1-2 months to remove any food particles or debris that may have accumulated in the dishwasher.
  • Clean the interior – including the tub, racks, and spray arms – with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to remove any mineral buildup or odors.
  • Don’t overload the dishwasher. Leave enough space between dishes.
  • Always use a detergent that’s specifically designed for dishwashers.
  • Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbers to clean the dishwasher, as these can damage the interior surfaces.
  • Check the soap dispenser for any blockages or debris and clean it as needed.
  • Follow the maintenance guidelines in your model’s user manual.
