Can MRCOOL mini split units also heat?
Tracy Beard / Tuesday April 2, 2024
You might already know that MRCOOL ductless mini split units can serve as an air conditioner to cool a space, but did you know they can also be used as a heat pump in winter?
The ability to both heat and cool is one of the major advantages of mini-split systems that provide year-round climate control in a room or zone. They can be a great, energy-efficient way to heat homes or supplement existing heating systems like furnaces or baseboard heaters.
Let’s find out more about the heating capabilities of MRCOOL mini split units so you can determine if it’s the right choice for your home.

What are MRCOOL mini split units?
MRCOOL is a leading brand of ductless mini-split air conditioning and heat pump systems. Ductless systems have an outdoor compressor connected to one or more slim, compact indoor air handler units that are usually mounted on walls or ceilings.
Unlike bulky central HVAC systems requiring ductwork, mini-split units use refrigerant lines that run through small holes in the wall. These units distribute heated or cooled air directly instead of forcing it through shafts and ducts.
Common MRCOOL mini-split options
- DIY line – Basic, most affordable systems that are easy to install
- Signature Series – High-efficiency, smart WiFi-enabled systems
- Elite Series – Commercial-grade systems for extreme weather conditions
- Hybrid Series – Combination mini-splits with existing HVAC systems
How do MRCOOL mini split units heat?
Many MRCOOL models can function as air conditioners and heat pumps. To do this, they reverse the flow of refrigerant to extract outdoor heat in winter and eject indoor heat in summer.
To function as a heat pump, a MRCOOL mini split unit will contain a compressor, evaporator coil, expansion valve, and condenser coil.
In cold weather, the liquid refrigerant in the mini-split unit absorbs thermal energy from the outdoor air via the condenser and compressor, intensifies that heat through compression, and releases it indoors as a hot gas via the evaporator coil and air handler. The refrigerant is then sent back outside to repeat the cycle. This air-source heat pump technology provides indoor heating without combustion.
The refrigerant line set – combined with the compressor to power the refrigerant cycle – enables this heat transfer from outdoors to indoors. The result is a single, compact unit that does double duty to cool and heat as needed.
Most MRCOOL heat pumps can operate well into freezing temperatures. Signature Series models offer heating down to -22°F (-30°C) and Elite Series models can heat down to -31°F (-35°C). DIY models may range from 5°F to -13°F (-15°C to -25°C).
Factors that affect a MRCOOL mini split’s heating performance
While MRCOOL heat pumps can work very well for heating, their capacity and efficiency depends on several factors, including the following:
Insulation
Well-insulated spaces with modern, well-sealed windows retain heat better, which allows mini split units to work their best for you. Poor insulation results in heat loss.
Outdoor temperature
Homes in colder regions with subzero winter temperatures may require a larger capacity unit than ones in temperate climates.
Space size
The larger the space you’re trying to heat, the bigger the unit you’ll need to do so. While you can find British Thermal Unit (BTU) calculators online, it’s best to consult with a professional HVAC technician to determine the appropriate size system for your space.
Installation
To heat the best, a mini split unit should be correctly positioned, be adequately charged with refrigerant and have no air leaks. It’s always best to have the unit professionally installed whenever possible.
MRCOOL mini split heat pumps vs. other heating methods
So now that we’ve walked through the process that MRCOOL mini split units provide heat, how does it compare to traditional furnaces or boilers? Let’s take a look at the costs, energy use, features, and environmental impact associated with the mini split and other main home heating methods:
Heating method | Operating cost | Annual efficiency | Greenhouse gas emissions | Smart features |
MRCOOL mini split | $$$ | Up to 300% | Low | Smart controls & scheduling |
Furnace (gas / propane) | $$ | 80-98% | High | Limited “smart” functionality |
Boiler | $$$ | 80-95% | High | Programmable thermostats available |
Baseboard heaters (electric) | $$$$ | 100% | Medium | Manual or programmable |
Mini-split heat pumps like MRCOOL typically provide the lowest operating costs and highest energy efficiency compared to other designs. Their use of electricity also emits fewer greenhouse gases than fossil fuel furnaces or boilers.
While gas furnaces and boilers have lower upfront costs, you may choose to upgrade to ENERGY STAR®-rated MRCOOL units to qualify for rebates and save over twice the heating energy.
FAQs
Can a MRCOOL mini split with heating replace my existing heating system?
In most cases, yes. MRCOOL units can provide enough heating capacity to be the primary heat source for well-insulated spaces up to 800-1200 square feet. You can also add multiple indoor air handler units to heat larger, open-concept homes.
How long do MRCOOL heat pumps typically last?
The compressors in many MRCOOL outdoor units are backed by up to a 10-year warranty. By maintaining them (clearing debris from coils, changing the filter, etc.), the overall system should provide over 20 years of reliable heating and cooling.
Are there any rebates or incentives available for installing a MRCOOL unit?
Yes! Many utility providers and municipalities offer rebates of $250 – $1000 for installing ENERGY STAR®-certified ductless units like MRCOOL. To find out, contact your local utility or state energy office to learn more about eligible incentives. The systems may also qualify for federal tax credits.
