Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Shut off the gas supply to prevent any gas leaks while you work.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to test and replace the Samsung range’s broil element

Follow these steps to test, remove, and replace the broil element in a Samsung range, including safety precautions and final checks for proper operation.

Step 1. Test the broil element

  1. Turn off the power at the breaker or unplug the range.
  2. Remove the Phillips head screws securing the back panel and set it aside.
  3. Locate the broil element, which is positioned about halfway down the back.
  4. Restore power by turning the breaker back on or plugging the unit in.
  5. Set the oven control to “Broil.”
  6. Use a multimeter set to AC voltage to check across the two terminals of the broil element.
  7. If the reading is 240 VAC and the element does not heat, the element is faulty and needs replacement.
  8. If the voltage is incorrect, inspect the wiring for burns or breaks.
  9. If the wiring is intact, the control board may be faulty and require replacement.

Step 2. Remove the broil element

  1. Turn off the power again by unplugging the range or switching off the breaker.
  2. Remove the oven door by opening it fully, pulling out the door catch clips, and lifting the door up and out.
  3. Remove the oven racks for better access.
  4. At the back of the range, remove the Phillips head screws securing the back panel.
  5. Locate the broil element and disconnect both wires from the terminals.
  6. Return to the front of the oven and remove the four screws securing the broil element.
  7. Carefully remove the broil element from the oven.

Step 3. Install the new broil element

  1. Position the new broil element in place.
  2. Secure it with the four screws.
  3. At the back of the range, reconnect the two wires to the terminals.
  4. Reattach the back panel using the Phillips head screws.
  5. Return to the front of the oven and reinstall the oven racks.
  6. Set the oven door into position, securing the door catches.
  7. Check that the door opens and closes properly.
  8. Turn the breaker back on or plug the range back in.
  9. Set the oven to “Broil” and check if the element heats properly.
  10. A slight odor may be present during initial use, which is normal.
