What you need
- Phillips head screwdriver
NOTE: The specific tools required may vary depending on the model of your appliance and the type of fasteners used on it. Always consult the user manual or refer to any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer for the recommended tools for your appliance model.
Safety tips
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
- Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.

How to check the door hinges
The following information in this article is based on model FTQ387LWGX and may not apply to your specific appliance model. We strive to offer helpful advice for DIY appliance repairs, but variations in models and configurations can lead to differences in troubleshooting steps, error codes and part replacements. For the most accurate guidance, we strongly recommend consulting the technical sheet for your specific appliance model.
- Check the door hinges for any debris that might be preventing them from closing correctly. Wipe away any debris you find.
- Open the oven door and then lower it to see if it drops down without resistance. If the door falls freely, then the hinges are likely worn out and need to be replaced. The door should lower smoothly and not feel too loose.
- See if the door is level when it’s opened. If the door is sitting below level, the hinges are likely damaged or misaligned.
- Make sure the latch for the self-cleaning function is lining up correctly with the door. If the latch is stuck outward, it could prevent the door from closing properly.
- If the door glass has been broken in the past, check for broken glass in the hinge area. If you find any pieces, carefully clean them out.
How to replace the hinge(s)
If you’ve determined that one or more hinges need to be replaced, follow these steps:
- Place a soft towel or blanket on the floor to protect the door once it’s off the range.
- Open the door all the way. You’ll notice a small swivel or hinge lock that keeps the door from closing. Engage the lock by raising the door back slightly until it stops.
- Hold both sides of the door firmly and lift it off the range. Gently place the door face down on the towel or blanket, and make sure the front panel is on a soft surface to avoid scratches.
- At the top of the inner door panel, find the two Phillips head screws. Remove these screws carefully and set them aside.
- At the bottom ridge of the door, you’ll find more Phillips head screws. Remove them.
- On the inner door panel, find two more Phillips head screws securing the hinges. Remove these screws to separate the inner door liner from the outer door glass.
- Carefully take out the old hinges.
Now that you’ve removed the old hinges, it’s time to install the new ones.
- Place the new hinges in the same position as the old ones on the door panel.
- Place the inner door liner back over the new hinges and secure it by replacing the Phillips head screws that hold the hinges in place.
- Put the outer door glass back in position and secure the trim on the bottom of the door.
- Tighten the Phillips head screws at the bottom of the door to hold everything together.
- Replace the screws at the top of the door to finish reassembling it.
With the door reassembled, it’s time to put it back on your range.
- Slide the hinges into the slots on the range. Once the hinges are in place, lower the door gently.
- Swivel the locks on the hinges back into position to secure the door to the range.
- Gently close the door.
