How to install liquid propane conversion kit GRLP3 on a gas Frigidaire range
Samantha Bullington / Friday January 12, 2024
Thinking of switching your gas range from natural gas to propane for a boost in energy efficiency? You’re not alone, but the conversion process can seem daunting without guidance. Don’t worry—our detailed how-to video just below will walk you through the steps to safely convert your Frigidaire range, helping you make the transition hassle-free and convenient.
Homes with a gas supply are typically set up to use natural gas, but you might be considering switching to propane. Propane and natural gas burn in similar ways, but they differ in density and the amount of energy they produce. Propane is considered more energy-efficient and has more heat energy than natural gas, so you won’t need as much for cooking.
To convert a gas Frigidaire range to propane, you’ll need a kit and will have to switch the orifices.

Keep safety first
When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or parts. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
- Turn off the gas to your unit.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
Installation steps
Step 1 – Access the regulator
- Make sure the gas supply is turned off.
- Pull out the drawer assembly.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to press in on the retaining tabs so you can completely remove the drawer.
Step 2 – Remove the regulator
- Find the regulator assembly, which is usually on the bottom right portion of the oven.
- Remove the protective dust cap.
- Use a 5/8-inch socket to loosen and remove the metal cap.
- Flip the cap over.
- Thread in the metal cap so the hollow end is facing outward.
- Use a 5/8-inch socket to tighten the cap.
- Reinstall the dust cap.

Step 3 – Install the surface orifice
- Remove the metal grate and cap.
- Remove the burner.
- Use a ratchet with a 7-millimeter socket to remove the old orifice.
- Identify the orifice sizes marked with letters (e.g., D or B) underneath the burner caps. Refer to the instructions to match the letters with the appropriate orifices for propane gas.
- Insert the new orifice into the 7-millimeter socket, then thread it in and tighten it.
- Reinstall the burner.
- Reinstall the burner cap.
- Reinstall the grate.
Repeat the process for the other 3 burners.
Step 4 – Adjust the bake burner
- The bake burner has an adjustable orifice spud. Use a 1/2-inch wrench to turn the spud clockwise until it bottoms out. Then turn it back about 1-1/2 turns. Tighten it until it’s snug, but don’t overtighten since that can cause damage.
- Turn the gas supply back on to check the flame color. You should see blue flames. If the flames have yellow tips, the spud will need to be adjusted until you have a blue flame.
Step 5 – Adjust the broil burner
- Open the oven door.
- Take out the racks.
- Use a 1/2-inch wrench to tighten down the spud in the upper back towards the middle.
Step 6 – Reinstall the lower drawer assembly
- Line up the track with the slider and slide on the drawer assembly.
- Press in the retaining tabs to lock the assembly in place before sliding the drawer in.
Finishing up
- Double-check that all the burner caps and components are replaced correctly.
- Review the instructions one more time to double-check your work.
- Plug in the range and make sure the gas supply is on.
- Use a gas leak detector fluid to coat valves, joints, and hoses, or use soapy water to check for leaks. If no bubbles appear, the range is safe to operate on propane.
