If your top-load Maytag washer isn’t starting, spinning or agitating when you shut the lid, you may have a faulty lid lock assembly. When it malfunctions, the washer thinks the lid is always up.

You can find a replacement lid lock assembly that’s compatible with your washer by entering your model number at AppliancePartsPros.com. What is the lid lock assembly & why would it need to be replaced?
The lid lock assembly is an important safety mechanism in top-load washing machines that prevents the washer from running when the lid is open.
The assembly includes a latch, a locking mechanism, a switch, and wiring that provides communication between the lid lock and the washer control board. When the lid is shut, the lid strike presses onto a bracket mounted inside of the lock assembly. This triggers the switch to send a signal that the lid is closed. Then the washer will send voltage to the locking mechanism that will lock the strike in place, allowing a cycle to start.
The lid lock assembly prevents accidents involving hands and items from getting caught in the spinning drum by not allowing the lid to be opened unless the cycle is paused and the tub is no longer rotating.
Over time, the lid lock assembly can wear out or the switch can malfunction. Some signs to watch out for include:
- The washer not starting, spinning or agitating when the lid is closed
- The washer continues washing with the lid open
- Obvious damage to the lid lock assembly
Replacing a faulty lid lock assembly restores safety to your washer, and if you do it yourself, you can save the cost of a service call.
What you need
- 1/4-inch socket
- Flat-head screwdriver
- New lid lock assembly (make sure it’s compatible with your washer model)

Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or parts. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your washer or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
- Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
- If the washer has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access washer parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your washer or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the washer or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
- Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

Replacement steps
- Use a 1/4-inch nut driver to remove the screws along the edges of the back console cover and the harness cover near the left hinge.
- Set the covers to the side.
- Remove the 1/4-inch screws at the top of the top panel hinge on each corner.
- Disconnect the wire from the main control by pulling the wire retainer out and then pressing the wire connector lock tabs while pulling out.
- Push the wire through the top panel, press the plastic mount lock tabs to push it down, and move to the front.
- At the front, tape the lid to the top panel and pull the top panel forward, lift it up, and slide it back while lifting. This lets the top panel clear the mounting hooks so you can lean the top panel back and not worry about the lid opening.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to lift on the wire mounting clips of the lid lock harness so you can easily slide the harness out.
- Use the 1/4-inch nut driver and remove the mounting screws of the lid lock.
- Pull the lid lock away and set it to the side.
- Press the bezel out at the locking tab and slide it down. You might need to loosen the tape holding the lid to do this.
- Reach in between the lid and panel and pull the old bezel out.
- Install the new bezel in place by inserting it and pushing it up, which will lock it in place.
- Install the lid lock assembly by lining it up with the bezel and securing it with the 1/4-inch screws.
- Insert the wires into the mounting clips starting from the lock and back to the console.
- Feed the wires through and lock the plastic bracket into place by firmly pressing it down.
- Set the top panel down by pulling it forward to let it drop, then push it back to lock it in place.
- Connect the wire harness to the main control and press the retainer into the control port.
- Reinstall the console back panel, harness cover and top panel hinge screws.
