How to Tell If My Drain Hose is Bad
If you notice that your washing machine is leaking, make note of both where the leaks are coming from and when they’re happening. If the water is spilling at the back, especially if it’s only happening as the tub is emptying, there’s a good chance the drain hose is damaged. To verify, pull your washer away from the wall and check the length of the drain tube. First, check that the clamps and clips are all seated properly. You may be able to avoid having to replace the hose entirely if it turns out a seal has been weakened because a clamp has fallen out of place! If everything is in order, look and feel for any cracks, punctures, or parts of the hose that feel particularly brittle. Drain hoses are made of material that can deteriorate with age, and so it’s not unusual for the part to fail with extended use. If you find damage, it’s time to replace the part!

You may also find the washer’s model number behind the kickplate at the bottom of the washer or behind the front access panel.
How To Replace A Washer Drain Hose
When preparing this tutorial, we replaced the drain hose on a Samsung top-loading washing machine. This is a quick and easy job, and the steps outlined here will likely line up with most other brands and models of washer. However, you may find that the drain hose is secured in a different location on your washer. If this is the case, you can consult the diagrams in your appliance’s manual for specific details. You can also check out our YouTube channel – we have washer hose installation videos for several major appliance brands.
Tools for the job
This is a quick, simple repair, and you just need some basic tools to get the job done. Gather these materials before you begin:
- A compatible replacement drain hose
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Slip joint pliers
- Towels
- A bucket
- Work gloves
Before you begin
For safety, be sure to disconnect the washer from its power source, either at the wall outlet or the circuit breaker. Never complete maintenance or repairs on an appliance that is still receiving power! For this job, you will also want to turn off the hot and cold water supplies to avoid any surprise messes
Bail out any water that’s still in the washer tub before beginning. Even if you think your washer is bone dry, you should still lay down some towels around your work area and have a bucket on standby to catch any spills. If you’ve been having drain hose trouble, there’s a chance you might have some water sitting somewhere in the hose or the appliance itself.
Replacing A Washing Machine Drain Hose
- Pull your washer slightly away from the wall. You’ll need access to the rear of the washer, and this may make removing the drain hose from the drain slightly easier.
- Detach the drain hose from its drain. Your washer’s drain hose may simply empty out into a sink or a floor drain, or it may be attached to a wall drain. How you remove it will depend on where it’s been placed for emptying. You may be able to just remove the hose from a given drain by lifting it out, or you may need to loosen a clamp, remove a cable tie, or twist it to free it from a mounting point.
- Place the end of the drain hose into a bucket or other receptacle to empty completely. If you’re confident the drain hose is dry, you can skip this step.
- Next remove the plastic clamp that holds the hose to the upper back of the washer. There is likely a small plastic clamp that is held in place by a single Phillips head screw. Remove that to take the clamp off and free up the hose.
- If you haven’t done so already, now would be a good time to set down some towels. Put them beneath the point where the hose is connected to the washer to catch anything that might drain out.
- Slide the lower clamp that connects the hose to the washer up to free up the drain hose. Use your pliers to release the metal clamp and slide it up the hose. Your washer’s drain hose may not be held in place by a metal clamp. If it’s held in place by a plastic ring or clip, remove the mounting screws holding it in place before pulling it out of the washer. If your new hose does not come with the same mounting hardware, you will need to reuse the old mounting hardware, so pry the ring or clip off of the old hose with a flathead screwdriver.
- Pull the old drain hose off the connector, then remove the old hose. It may be held in place by another clamp, but you should be able to just pop it out by hand.
- If your new hose doesn’t come with a metal clamp, take the clamp from the old hose and install it on the new one. Press the two tabs together to loosen the clamp, pull it off the old hose, and slide it onto the new one.
- Push the new drain hose onto the connector fitting on the back of the washer until it bottoms out.
- Use your pliers to move the clamp down into place. It should sit between the two lines near the mouth of the hose. This ensures that you have a good seal on the hose. If your washer has a mounting ring or clip, you can reinstall the screws that hold it in place now.
- Pop the new hose into place in the plastic clip if your washer has one.
- Secure the hose to the back of the washer with the plastic clamp.
- Reseat the other end of the hose into the appropriate drain.
- Time for a test run! Plug your washer back in, turn the water supplies back on, and run an empty wash cycle to make sure there are no leaks. You can run the shortest wash available to make this process a little easier.
