Safety tips

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to change out the broil element

Replace the broil element in your GE range by following these steps.

Step 1: Disassemble the range

  1. Unplug the oven from the power supply.
  2. Open the oven door and lift the oven racks to pull them out.
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver to flip up the stoppers on each oven door hinge. Grab the door by the sides and raise it until it comes off the range.
  4. Use a nut driver to take out the screw that holds the temperature sensor in the center of the broil element bracket. Pull the sensor partly out.
  5. Use the nut driver to take out the two screws from the rear bracket.
  6. Use a 1/4-inch nut driver to remove the two screws that hold the broil element support bracket. Slowly pull out the broil element until you see the terminals.
  7. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the wires from the terminals. Make sure they don’t fall back into the holes.

Step 2: Install the new broil element

  1. Place the oven sensor into the groove in the new broil element bracket. Slide the wire contacts onto the terminals.
  2. Install the new broil element by sliding it into place.
  3. Secure the support bracket to the top with the two 1/4-inch screws. Secure the rear bracket with the two 1/4-inch screws.

Step 3: Reassemble the range

  1. Slide the temperature sensor back into position. Secure the sensor with one screw to the element bracket.
  2. Grab the oven door by the sides and install it on the oven. Open the door and lock both stoppers.
  3. Replace the oven racks.
  1. Slowly close the oven door to make sure it’s correctly installed.
  2. Plug the range back in.
  3. Turn on the broil function and make sure the new element heats up properly.
