Safety tips
Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair.
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- If you have a gas model, shut off the gas supply to prevent any leaks while you work.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
How to replace the infinite switch seal
Ready…set…replace! Follow these steps to protect the infinite switch & get your GE cooktop in better shape.
Step 1: Remove the cooktop
- Disconnect the cooktop from the power source.
- Find and remove any brackets or fasteners that secure the cooktop underside to the counter.
- See if your model has a hardwired power cable. If it does, disconnect it before you remove the cooktop.
- Lift the cooktop. You’ll need to break the seal between the existing foam tape and the counter. Use a putty knife or razor blade to slice through the tape seal if needed.
- Place support sticks or blocks underneath to keep the cooktop level.

Step 2: Disassemble the cooktop
- Remove all of the control knobs. You should be able to pull straight off the shafts. Set them aside in a safe place.
- Note the sizes and locations of the screws that hold the glass cooktop to the metal chassis. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove them.
- Carefully lift the glass top. On some models, foam tape will seal the glass to the frame. If that’s the case, use a putty knife to gently pry it free.
- Make sure the infinite switch shafts thread through their grommets as you separate the glass. Set the glass cooktop on towels or a soft surface to prevent scratches.

Step 3: Replace the infinite switch seal
- Find the bad infinite switch seal. From underneath, use your fingers to push the old seal up and out while pulling it through from above.
- Thoroughly clean the opening to make sure you can create a tight fit with the new seal.
- Lightly wet the replacement infinite switch seal so it can slide into place more easily. Position the new seal and gently push it into place from below while making sure it seats correctly.
- Repeat this process to replace any other worn infinite switch seals while you have access to them.

Step 4: Reassemble the cooktop
- Replace any torn or damaged insulation tape around the metal chassis. Use new GE cooktop insulation tape if needed.
- Remove any leftover residue and make sure the surface is clean before installing new foam seal tape around the outer glass edge.
- Carefully lower the glass cooktop into place over the chassis. Line up the infinite switch shafts with their grommets.
- Press down firmly to attach the new foam tape seal. Replace all metal screws to secure the glass cooktop.
- Put all of the control knobs back in their positions and make sure they’re lined up with the shaft flats and tabs.

Step 5: Reinstall the cooktop
- Lift the cooktop and position it back into the counter opening. Make sure the front edge is properly seated.
- From underneath, reattach any brackets or screws that hold the cooktop snug to the counter.
- If the power supply cable was disconnected earlier, reconnect it now.
- Restore power to the cooktop.
- Check the burners and controls to make sure they’re working correctly.
