What you’ll need
This repair only requires a few basic tools and parts:
- 1/4 inch nut driver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Needle nose pliers
- New temperature control (part #WR09X26874)
Safety precautions
Safety should always be a priority when working on any appliance. Here are a few practical tips to help you stay safe:
- Turn off the power to the appliance by unplugging it or switching off the circuit breaker before starting any maintenance or repairs. This protects you from the risk of electric shock.
- Wear insulated gloves to shield your hands from sharp edges, pinching hazards, or debris.
- Work at a steady pace and take your time to avoid accidents or injuries.
- Make sure your workspace is well-lit so you can clearly see and access the parts you’re working on.
- Keep the area clear of clutter, and ensure children and pets stay out of the workspace.
- Never handle internal parts with wet hands. Check that both your hands and the work area are completely dry.
- Refer to your appliance’s user manual for any specific instructions or safety guidelines related to the part or repair.
- Handle parts gently to avoid damage to the appliance or potential injuries from applying too much force.
- Use safety glasses when dealing with chemicals, dust, or large debris to protect your eyes from harm.
- If the appliance was recently used, give it enough time to cool down before working on any heated components.
- Take photos or notes of wiring connections and terminals before disconnecting anything to make reassembly easier.
- Avoid touching exposed wires or terminals. If you must handle wires, use non-conductive tools or wear insulated gloves to minimize the risk of electrical shock.
Removing the old temperature control
- Start by clearing out the refrigerator interior. Remove all shelves, bins, drawers, and other loose items to give yourself free access.
- At the top of the fridge is the temperature control panel. Remove the small access panel held in place by three 1/4 inch screws – use your nut driver to detach them.
- Unplug the wiring harness by squeezing the connector’s side tab while pulling it free.
- Carefully remove the metal shield behind the control panel using a flathead screwdriver. Detach the green ground wire and set the shield aside.
- Now you can access the old temperature control. Use pliers to detach the sensor bulb from the control housing bracket.
- Gently maneuver the bulb out, being careful not to kink or damage it.
- Lift the old temperature control up and off its mounting pegs.
- Slide the knob off the shaft and set the broken control aside.
Installing the new GE temperature control
- Shape the sensor bulb on the new control to match the old one – bend it to fit into the control housing properly.
- Insert the shaped bulb back into the tube holder and insert it into the foam duct.
- Remount the new temperature control on its pegs and attach the green ground wire.
- Replace the metal shield and secure it with the retainer clip.
- Reconnect the wiring harness plug.
Reassembling the refrigerator
- With the new part installed, replace the temperature control access panel using its three screws.
- Make sure the wiring fits nicely into the cabinet.
- Replace all the shelving and bins in their original spots.
- Plug the refrigerator back in.
- Let it run for a bit to verify it’s cooling properly and maintaining a steady temperature.
