Need a part?  Search below using your appliance model number to find exactly what you need:

The mode shifter is a small but important mechanical part in GE washing machines that controls the transition between the agitate and spin cycles. By engaging and disengaging the transmission, the mode shifter helps the washer move from agitation to high speed to extract water from the laundry. If the mode shifter fails, your washer may not agitate or spin correctly.

Thankfully, you can replace the faulty mode shifter yourself so your GE washer can work correctly again.

You can find a replacement mode shifter WH03X30517 here. If you need other replacement parts for your GE washer, just enter your model number at AppliancePartsPros.com to find them. It’s that easy! Most orders arrive in just two business days, and we have thousands of guides to show you how to install your new parts.

Signs of a faulty mode shifter

You might need to replace the mode shifter if it’s experienced wear and tear from regular use or a mechanical failure.

Your washer might have a bad washer mode shifter if:

  • The washer won’t switch between agitating and spinning modes
  • You hear unusual noises or grinding sounds during the wash cycle
  • Your laundry is still soaking wet after the cycle ends, which suggests that the spin cycle didn’t engage

Keep safety first

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.

How to replace the mode shifter

Follow these steps to swap out the faulty mode shifter, which is mounted under the top of the washer, behind a removable access cover.

Step 1: Remove the access cover

  1. Make sure the washer is turned off and unplugged from the power outlet.
  2. Turn off the water supply to the washer.
  3. Use a 3/8-inch socket wrench to take out the 3 cover bolts. There are 2 along the top and 1 on the side.
  4. Detach the cover and set it aside.

Step 2: Remove the old mode shifter

  1. Find the mode shifter that’s mounted to the washer frame.
  2. Use your socket wrench to loosen the mounting bolts so you can detach the old mode shifter.
  3. Find the wire harness plug connected to the shifter. Depress the locking tab on the plug to disconnect it from the mode shifter.
  4. Tilt the old mode shifter sideways to remove it from the washer.

Step 3: Install the new GE mode shifter

  1. Align the mounting holes on the new mode shifter base with those on the washer frame.
  2. Partially insert the 2 mounting bolts into the holes.
  3. Use a socket wrench to gradually tighten the bolts and secure the new shifter. Don’t overtighten the bolts.
  4. Connect the wire harness to the outlet on the new mode shifter until you hear a click.
  5. Make sure everything is secure and connected correctly.

Step 4: Replace the access cover

  1. Line up the screw holes on the access cover with the washer frame.
  2. Insert the 3 cover bolts partway in, then tighten down each bolt with your socket wrench until they’re snug.
  3. Check that the cover is seated flush against the washer before fully tightening the bolts. Don’t overtighten them, or you may crack the plastic housing.

Final steps

  1. Turn the water supply valves back on and plug the washer power cord into the outlet.
  2. Run a short test cycle to make sure the new mode shifter is shifting properly between agitate and spin.
