Dive into our comprehensive guide below, featuring an easy-to-follow video walkthrough, and learn how to restore your ice maker to its full potential in just under an hour!
The ice auger support helps drive the ice container auger and allows it to dispense ice cubes or crushed ice from the bin. With repeated use over time, the support may wear out or become damaged. You may also need to replace it if the auger isn’t turning or ice isn’t being crushed properly.
This is an easy DIY repair process that typically takes around 30 to 60 minutes to complete so that you can once again enjoy the convenience of a working ice dispenser.

Safety precautions
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
- Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
- Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
- Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
- Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.

Replacement steps
Step 1: Remove the old ice auger support
- Open the freezer door.
- Lift the ice door and slide it back.
- Lift the ice arm and move it to the OFF position so it doesn’t get hit by the bucket.
- Lift the ice bucket and pull it out to remove it from the freezer.
- Place the assembly on a towel or padded surface to protect it from damage during the repair.
- Use a 1/4-inch nut driver to remove all the screws that hold the ice container in place.
- Spin the assembly around to access and remove the screws that go around the edge of the ice container.
- Remove the screw that connects the rod to the back of the ice container.
- Lift the ice container off the assembly.
- Separate the two pieces of the ice container.
- Remove the drive cup and sleeve by lifting them and pulling them off. Set them aside.
- Lift the auger out of the cover and set the cover aside.
- Use a screwdriver to lift the clip and release it from the assembly.
- Remove the washer under the clip.
- Push the auger so it extends slightly, then grab it and separate the auger assembly from the cover.
- Take a picture of the auger teeth arrangement for reference when you install the new support.
- As you remove the auger teeth, stay mindful of the individual spacers and blades. Use rubber bands to hold the auger teeth, spacers, and blades together.
- Use a 9/16-inch wrench to loosen and remove the nut at the end of the auger. The nut has a reverse thread, so turn it clockwise to loosen it. Once it’s loose, remove the nut by hand.
- Remove the auger blades, then the bushing.
Step 2: Install the new ice auger support
- Insert the auger of the new support through the center hole so that it rests on the drum.
- Attach the first bushing with the lip facing the drum, then insert it into the ice auger support.
- Put the auger teeth back on by aligning the pins on one side with the corresponding holes.
- Slide the auger assembly onto the support. Make sure the flats on the auger align with the flats on the teeth.
- Push the auger assembly on.
- Place the outer washer on the auger assembly.
- Screw the nut back on. Remember: it has a reverse thread. Rotate it counterclockwise to tighten it. Make sure it’s snug but not overtightened to avoid damage to the plastic.
- Remove the rubber bands from the auger spacers and blades.
- Position the cover for the crusher and slide it onto the assembly. Make sure the pin aligns with the corresponding hole.
- Insert the washer and the clip into their respective positions.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to secure the clip in place.
- Set the assembly into the front part and make sure it’s correctly aligned.
- Attach the sleeve and drive cup by aligning and placing them on the assembly.
- Put the ice container back onto the assembly so that it sits over the sleeve and auger.
- Use the 1/4-inch nut driver to reinstall the screws on the inside of the assembly.
- Turn the assembly around and reinstall the screws on the back.
- Reattach the spring in the bracket to the connector bar. Lift the spring and line up the bracket holes. Turn it and place it over the mounting spot. Use the 1/4-inch nut driver to secure it with the screw.
- Apply tension to the spring by wrapping it around the mounting spot and then around the connector bar. This provides tension for the ice deflector to open and close.
- Place the reassembled ice bucket assembly back into the freezer by aligning it with the rails.
- Move the shut-off arm down to the ON position and close the ice door.
- Close the freezer door and plug in the refrigerator.
