How to replace the gearcase in a top-load Kenmore washer

Steven E / Thursday March 28, 2024

Is your Kenmore top-load washer failing to agitate or spin? If so, the issue may lie with the gearcase. The gearcase helps transfer power from the motor to the agitator and spin basket so the washer can agitate and spin.

If you’re looking for a replacement gearcase or other parts for your Kenmore washer, you can use your model number to find what you need at AppliancePartsPros.com. We also have thousands of free DIY troubleshooting and repair guides to help you fix your appliance yourself.

Disclaimer: The part replacement information provided in this article is based on general service manuals and may not apply to your specific appliance model. While we strive to offer helpful advice for DIY appliance repairs, variations in models and configurations can lead to differences in troubleshooting steps, error codes and part replacements. For the most accurate guidance, we strongly recommend consulting the technical sheet for your specific appliance model.

What you need

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Putty knife
  • 7/16-inch and 1/2-inch socket
  • Replacement gearcase (make sure it’s compatible with your specific washer model BEFORE installing!)
  • Blanket or padding (to protect your floor)

Disclaimer: The specific tools required may vary depending on the model of your appliance and the type of fasteners used on it. Always consult the user manual or refer to any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer for the recommended tools for your appliance model.

Keep safety first

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.

How to replace the gearcase

Step 1: Access the console and cabinet

  1. Turn off the dryer and unplug it from the power supply.
  2. Find the clips on the left and right sides that hold the console to the cabinet.
  3. Gently slide a putty knife under the console about an inch from each end, then push the clip towards the back of the washer while prying up and pulling forward to release one side. Repeat the process on the other side.
  4. Flip the console over.
  5. Find the two brass clips holding the cabinet to the back panel. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to push down and release these clips.
  6. Disconnect the lid switch, tilt the cabinet forward, and slide it off the frame.
  7. Set the cabinet aside.
  8. Remove the softener cup or agitator cap from the agitator.
  9. Remove the dust cover from inside the agitator.
  10. Use the 7/16-inch socket to remove the agitator bolt and agitator, along with the clip underneath the agitator (if applicable).

Step 2: Remove the drain pump and motor

  1. Find the drain pump in the center, underneath the tub.
  2. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the two clips that hold the drain pump in place.
  3. Slide the pump forward and off the motor shaft, but leave the hoses connected as you do this.
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pop off the two clips holding the motor to the gearcase.
  5. Disconnect the wire harness going to the motor since the motor can get heavy once the clips are removed.

Step 3: Install the new gearcase

  1. Pull the washer far enough from the wall so you can lay it on its back.
  2. Fold a blanket and place it on the floor to protect your floor, then gently lay the washer on top of it.
  3. The gearcase is held in place by three 1/2-inch bolts. Remove these bolts, then gently slide the entire gearcase towards you until it’s completely out.

If you’re not replacing the clutch and coupler, you’ll need to remove them from the old gearcase before installing the new one. To remove the clutch, pull it off the washer, then use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the retainer. Pop out the retainer ring with the screwdriver and slide the clutch off the shaft. You’ll install these on the new gearcase in the reverse order that you removed them.

If the coupler is seized on either shaft, you’ll need to order a new one.

Remove the motor bracket and wire harness connector to install them on the new gearcase.

  1. Install the clutch, coupler (if applicable), motor bracket, and wire harness connector on the new gearcase in the reverse order of removal.
  2. Reinstall the motor and pump.
  3. Reconnect the harness to the motor and the lid switch.
  4. Look over your work to make sure everything is put back together correctly.
