What the part does

The temperature selector on a GE electric dryer allows the user to choose the appropriate heat setting for different fabric types and drying needs. This switch controls the amount of heat produced by the heating element during the drying cycle. By selecting a higher temperature setting, the dryer will produce more intense heat to quickly dry heavy, durable fabrics. A lower temperature setting provides gentler heat ideal for delicate items. The temperature selector works with the timer to ensure the clothes are dried thoroughly without over-drying or heat damage.

Symptoms of a bad temperature selector

If the temperature selector is faulty, you may encounter any of several symptoms:

  • The dryer only runs on a single temperature setting, regardless of the selector position.
  • The dryer produces heat that does not reach the selected temperature level.
  • The temperature selector switch is stuck in one position or difficult to turn.
  • The clothes come out over-dried or excessively hot, even on a lower temperature setting.
  • The dryer shuts off prematurely due to overheating issues.

Possible causes

There are a few common reasons why the temperature selector may malfunction over time:

  • Normal wear and tear: After extensive use, the internal components of the temperature selector can become worn out, causing it to fail.
  • Electrical issues: Problems with the dryer’s wiring or control board can disrupt the proper function of the temperature selector.
  • Physical damage: If the temperature selector is bumped, dropped, or otherwise subjected to physical trauma, the internal mechanisms can become damaged.
  • Corrosion: Exposure to moisture, steam, or other environmental factors can cause corrosion on the selector’s electrical contacts.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms with your dryer, or it tests bad, it is time to replace the faulty temperature selector.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.
  • Take pictures or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting to prevent any problems with reassembly.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
