- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat-head screwdriver
The specific tools required may vary depending on the model of your appliance and the type of fasteners used on it.
Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Shut off the gas supply to prevent any gas leaks while you work.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
- Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
- Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
How to test and replace the Samsung range’s bake element
Here are the steps to test and replace the bake element in a Samsung range, from accessing the part to installing a new one.
Step 1. Access the bake element
- Unplug the range from the outlet or switch off the power at the breaker.
- Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws holding the back panel in place.
- Once the screws are removed, take off the back panel.
- Locate the terminal block, remove it, and push it aside to gain access to the bake element.
Step 2. Test the bake element
- The bake element is at the bottom of the oven and is not visible from the inside.
- Disconnect one of the wires from the bake element.
- Set a multimeter to resistance mode (Ω symbol).
- Place the meter’s probes on both terminals of the element.
- A properly functioning element should measure between 17-20 ohms.
- If the reading is significantly off or displays “OL” (open line), the element is faulty and must be replaced.
NOTE: Generally, for every 1 degree in temperature difference, 2 Ohms could be added or subtracted. If the temperature in your home is cooler, resistance would be subtracted.
Step 3. Remove the faulty element
- Push some insulation aside near the terminal to access the screws.
- Remove the screws securing the element on both sides.
- Disconnect the wires from the terminals.
- Pull the old bake element straight out.
Step 4. Install the new bake element
- Insert the new element into place.
- Secure it with the Phillips head screws.
- Reconnect the wires to the terminals.
Step 5. Reassemble the range
- Reinstall the terminal block.
- Replace the rear panel and secure it with the screws.
- Plug the range back in or turn the breaker back on.
- Turn on the oven and check if the new bake element heats properly.
