Safety tips

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Shut off the gas supply to prevent any gas leaks while you work.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to test and replace the Samsung range’s infinite switch

Follow these steps to test the infinite switch for proper voltage and replace it if it is not functioning correctly.

Step 1. Test the infinite switch

LIVE VOLTAGE WARNING: For this test, the washer needs to be plugged in and powered on. Please be very careful to protect yourself from electric shock, which has the potential to cause serious injuries. Don’t ever test live voltage if you’re uncomfortable using a multimeter.

  1. Disconnect power to range dryer by unplugging the power cord or turning off the circuit breaker.
  2. Open the oven door.
  3. Remove the four screws securing the console.
  4. Lift the bottom of the console outward and remove it.
  5. Close the oven door and rest the console on it, placing a towel or pad underneath to prevent scratches.
  6. Locate the Left Front (LF) switch in the console area.
  7. Plug the range back in or turn the breaker on.
  8. Turn the infinite switch to the ON position.
  9. Activate the inner coil of the burner.
  10. Set a multimeter to AC voltage.
  11. Place one probe on the H2 terminal and the other probe on the H1 terminal.
  12. Check for a reading of 240 VAC.
  13. Turn the switch to the inner and outer coil positions.
  14. Place one probe on the H2 terminal and the other on the P terminal.
  15. Check for a reading of 240 VAC.
  16. If either test fails and does not show 240 VAC, the infinite switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Step 2. Remove the faulty infinite switch

  1. Unplug the range or switch off the breaker.
  2. Open the oven door if it is closed.
  3. Remove the four screws securing the console if not already removed.
  4. Pull the console out and rest it on the oven door.
  5. Pull off the knob from the infinite switch.
  6. Remove the two screws securing the switch to the console.
  7. Transfer the wires from the old switch to the new switch one at a time.

Step 3. Install the new infinite switch

  1. Position the new infinite switch in place.
  2. Install and tighten the two screws securing the switch.
  3. Reattach the knob.
  4. Position the console back in place.
  5. Reinsert and tighten the four screws securing the console.
  6. Plug the range back in or turn the breaker back on.
  7. Turn the burner switch ON and check if the inner and outer coil settings work properly.
  8. Verify that the burner heats up correctly to confirm the replacement was successful.
