Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
- Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.

How to test the single infinite switch
Follow these steps to determine if the single infinite switch is faulty or not.
- Unplug the electric range or turn off the circuit breaker to the range.
- Remove the rear panel of the control panel by taking out the screws that hold it in place.
- Find the single infinite switch, which will have 5 connections: L1, L2, H1, H2, and P.
LIVE VOLTAGE WARNING: For this test, the range needs to be plugged in and powered on. Please be very careful to protect yourself from electric shock, which has the potential to cause serious injuries. Don’t ever test live voltage if you’re uncomfortable using a multimeter.
- Set your multimeter to measure AC voltage (VAC).
- Plug the range back in.
- Use the meter probes to measure the voltage between the L1 (double black wire) and L2 (double red wire) terminals. You should get a reading of 240 volts AC.
- If you have 240 VAC between L1 and L2, set the infinite switch to turn on the element.
- Measure the voltage between the H1 (orange and orange with violet stripe) and H2 (yellow) terminals. You should also get 240 VAC here.
If you have the proper 240 VAC readings between L1-L2 and H1-H2, then the switch is functioning correctly and something else may be preventing your range from working correctly. If you don’t get 240 VAC between H1-H2, then the switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.
How to replace the switch (if needed)
- Unplug the range or turn off the circuit breaker to the unit.
- Disconnect the wiring from the faulty infinite switch.
- Pull off the knob and remove the 2 screws that hold the switch in place.
- Install the new infinite switch by securing it with the 2 screws.
- Reattach the knob.
- Reconnect the wiring to the new switch and make sure each wire is connected to the proper terminal (L1, L2, H1, H2, P).
- Replace the rear panel and secure it with the screws.
- Plug in the range or turn the circuit breaker back on.
